(Rachel) Maddow was so "unbelievable" with the AR-15 that people stopped to watch
Their first date was at a shooting range—they fired muskets, pistols and rifles and threw tomahawks. Mikula says Maddow was so "unbelievable" with the AR-15 that people stopped to watch.

I found this an interesting tidbit out of Newsweek profile on Rachel Maddow. H'mmm, wonder if we could set up a match between her and Caribou Barbie. I'd love to watch Freeper heads explode if Rachel kicked Palin's butt in a shooting contest!

1. Maybe she'll stop being such a hand-wringer now
I still remember on election night, after Obama took Pennsylvania (right as soon as the polls closed), Maddow was still wailing that Obama had yet to flip any Red states.

Geesh!

5. What's your point?
It is impossible to tell what point it is you are trying to get across, other than it appears you don't care for Ms. Maddow.

8. Looking on the dark side is characteristic of those with cyclical depression
It's also been found that people prone to depression tackle problems with much more depth and creativity than their more superficial and terminally perky coworkers. When asked to evaluate themselves, optimiists rate themselves higher than their coworkers and bosses do. The self-evaluation of sourballs tends to agree with the boss and coworker evaluations. Note that they don't rate themselves lower; they are merely accurate.

18. I read an article some time ago about studies that show that
depressives have a much more realistic world view than nondepressives--not just about themselves, but about life in general.

24. Which probably explains why slightly rose-tinted glasses are the human neurotypical norm
Boosts your immune system and helps you to survive mostly unpleasant reality. But the tribe still needs at least a few folks to see things as they are, and the price is that some will spend too much time in the grey pit. Sort of like sickle cell anemia and malaria resistance, only more complicated.

28. Yep--and like shyness, too. About 20% of humans (and other mammals)
are inherently shy and timid. We need those who will go out and challenge the world, but we also need those who hold back, exercise caution, and spend time by themselves in introspection. On my Teacher, Teacher website I have a piece about such people, "Does Not Play Well with Others." In it I point out that many of our deepest thinkers, our artists and writers, and our inventors are introverts, but nowadays, a child who goes off by herself on the playground (as I often did as a child) is spotted by teachers and recommended for counseling or even antidepressants. Thank goodness I am too old to have had to deal with such meddling as a child!

29. Shy and timid are two different things...
There are a lot of shy risk takers out there, they just don't take risks socially.

I was exceedingly shy growing up but nevertheless engaged in a lot of physically dangerous behavior.

2. I like this part!
Maddow was, according to her parents, a curious, serious child who never spoke baby talk. When her mother, Elaine, would walk into the kitchen to prepare breakfast, the 4-year-old Rachel would be perched on a stool, with her nightgown and bed socks on, reading the newspaper.

I don't have a source for that, but I've heard others mention it.

10. This passage makes me ill...
"her partner for the past 10 years. They met when Mikula—who is warm, friendly and curvaceous, with vivid green eyes and blond hair—"

"curvaceous?" Is this necessary? Does it mean she's bulky but not fat? She has big breasts? What the hell?

14. Don't tell me, a guy wrote the article.
Edited on Sun Nov-23-08 09:11 AM by BerryBush
The media still have so much to learn about the inherent sexism of describing women's looks in a certain way irrelevant to who they are as people.

Editing to add: Surprise! It's a woman! I guess the sexism goes deeper than I thought!

Oh, and that "intense executive producer" of hers, Bill Wolff? That's Alison Stewart's husband. Which is why we're pretty much assured that Alison will always be able to find work at MSNBC if she wants it. (Not that she isn't good, but hey.)

16. Here's something I find interesting: the article says she considers herself a "dork."
Edited on Sun Nov-23-08 09:24 AM by BerryBush
Reading that (which didn't actually surprrise me) made me think "No wonder Keith Olbermann has championed her the way he has. He knows another 'dork' when he sees one."

It's time for the "dorks" to win.

Oh, and the cyclical depression? Goes a long way toward explaining her bouts of "Debbie Downer" attitude. I understand them completely.

I read they met when Susan, who is an artist, met Rachel when Susan hired her to do yard work when Rachel was in college!

Liberals are better shots than conservatives. When we have a gun in our hands, it's a tool that serves a function, and we intent to use it to the utmost of that function, just like we would a hammer or a screwdriver. When a conservative has a gun in his hands it's a fetishist icon of his own masculinity, an idol to be revered and bragged about, but that he's not good with in actual practice.

This is also why liberal men are better lovers ;)

23. We're better shots
and we have creative minds. Well, the dark-side would call it dirty, but I prefer to call it creative.

I'd love to meet Rachel on a range. Target shooting is to me one of those mind-body things where you're competing with yourself, not with another person.

She seems like one of those people you'd love to have over for coffee, where you could kick your shoes off, hang out and talk about anything in this world. My partner and I love her show. Wonder if she and her partner like dogs?

27. Rachel and Malloy keep me sane
I'm to the left of Obama and so are they, and they're not going to be shy about criticizing him from the left. Rachel flat-out states her intention to do just that in the linked article.

Now I just wish their shows didn't time conflict with each other. I usually record Rachel to watch after Malloy's show ends.
