I rescued a Human today
don't know if you all have seen this one or not.

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY

Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.
I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn’t be afraid. As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want her to know that I hadn’t been walked today. Sometimes the overworked shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want her to think poorly of them.
As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn’t feel sad about my past. I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.
She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me. I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship. A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.
Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.
I would promise to keep her safe.
I would promise to always be by her side.
I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.
I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor. So many more are out there who haven’t walked the corridors. So many more to be saved. At least I could save one.
I rescued a human today

4. Oh, my, that is beautiful.
My rescue doggie was my friend, companion and source of unconditional love for 13 years. Three years ago she left me and I still weep for her. Right now it's just too difficult to think of getting another friend, after all this time the pain of loss is too fresh (don't judge me, please--it's my heart that's on the mend!), and the thought of experiencing another loss is just too daunting for my soul to consider. But time will eventually heal me and the day will come when I will once again be the human who is rescued by one of God's special creations.

Till then, I will remember these words and I thank you for posting them.

15. My daughter was rescued by her dog from a fire
She was living in a basement apartment in Seattle, going to college, and had lit candles on her wall sconces. She forgot about them and got into the shower. Her Weimaraner (sp) came in the bathroom and barked until she got out and found her ceiling was on fire. The apartment was full of smoke. His name was Sterling and she lost him to lymphoma a few years later.

Last year we found a female Weimaraner at the local shelter and I rescued her for my daughter. She named her Starling.

10. OMG that made me cry
I have two cats and a puppy.
my first cat, Tilly, was a stray I found by a trash bin - she adopted us.
My second cat, Socks, came from the Humane Society, and we got her as a companion for Tilly. Socks was very skinny when we got her - so much so, the vet was unsure if she would live. We believe she was abused before she came to live with us. But we got her happy and healthy now.

My puppy. Oh my puppy. Beaker is my puppy - he is 6 months old now. He is a purebred Bichon Frise.
We got him from the Humane Society. He was rescued from a puppy mill that was shut down and taken there. We got him at 3 months old. When my husband held him, Beaker looked up into his eyes and licked his nose. That sealed the deal.
He has made a difference in our lives.

My pets are my kids, and I love them dearly.

12. my dog rescued my daughter
She was suffering from depression, so I told her she needed to get out and she reluctantly agreed to go to the humane society to see about signing up to volunteer. When we got there, we looked at the animals first. In the puppy room, a volunteer was holding a little puppy that was shaking in her arms. The volunteer told us, the puppy was so scared and no one was able to comfort her. I went to look at the dogs. When I went back to look for my daughter, she was sitting in the puppy room and the little black and white dog was sleeping in her arms. My daughter looked up at me and said, "I knew just how she felt. I was so scared when I was waiting to be adopted too." (My daughter and I became a family when she was 9, after she had spent 4+ years in foster care.) Needless to say we went home with the puppy. (I always say I'm glad I didn't take her to volunteer at a nursing home, or we would have brought a grandma home.)

My daughter is in college now, so she had to leave the dogs at home. But she has been rescued again, this time by a cat who is her companion animal in her dorm.

All my guys have been rescue, including the two little ones in my sig. I take the older ones because I think they need me the most, and they have all been such special little beings, all with sad stories that I tried my best to give happy endings. And I have been very fortunate, since my guys seem to find me... And they've rescued me, many times over, as well...;(

21. We lost our rescue pup last Thursday...
We adopted him in 2001 from Dachshund rescue when they thought he was around 10 years old. Bandit was such a character! He was very emphatic and pushy while he trained us. It took about a month or so, but we eventually learned what he expected from us. It was obvious that he had been a man's dog, and he bonded most closely with my husband, who had never really had a dog of his own. DH is now as much as a dox-aholic as I am now!

Bandit cracked us up every day, and we are laughing and crying thinking of him. We will be adopting again in the spring, but we know there will only be one Bandit.

25. I am so sorry for your loss.
I have been there far too often with our fur family members over the years.

We found that the best way to honor our "best friend" is to give a loving home to a little one in need, passing on the love and the memory.

peace-

We will be getting another rescue pup in the spring. I am having shoulder surgery next week, and we think it would be best to wait until I have function in the shoulder first. But, believe me, we will have at least one new doggie in the house as soon as I am able!

26. I'm so very sorry...I lost mine recently also....
We got her in 2001 from a family who could no longer keep her because one of the kids had severe allergies. They were going to put her down if they couldn't find a home for her.

She joined our family (me, hubby, and two other dogs) on July 9, 2001, at the age of 5.

During the seven years we were together, she gave us such love and devotion as no human has ever known...or at least, that's how it felt.

She passed away, suddenly, on her 12th birthday...November 14, 2008.

I've cried a million tears since then.

It hurts so much to lose them, but it almost hurts more not to have their love in our lives at all.

24. I almost brought home a new puppy yesterday.
I need another mouth to feed, another dependent, like I need a hole in the head. Truly.

When I walked into the feed store, there was a temporary pen right in the middle of the floor by the door, with one free puppy left. An employee gave me the hard sell; they were really trying to find homes for these puppies. I cuddled the 8 week old sweetie up next to me, silently reminding me of all the reasons this was a REALLY bad idea. I put her back, wandered slowly through the place making my choices, knowing that I would stop back by and ignore that voice when I was done.

By the time I was done, an older woman (older than me, anyway, which is getting more and more infrequent, lol) had swept her up and was talking to her, tears in her eyes. It was a match, and I felt their joy. And, underneath my relief, more than a little disappointment.

That little puppy rescued a woman yesterday. I saw it in her eyes, in her body language.

I came home to give MY dog an extra hug.

She just loves her new home. I waited a year after losing my Frisky, and finally decided it was time. I wish I had been able to adopt several, there were so many great dogs at the shelter just looking for someone to rescue. But Precious is mine, or I'm hers, depending on which of us you ask. :-)

I have had German Shepherds, and they are predisposed to getting Degenerative Myelopathy...a canine form of ALS. Eventually they lose the use of their back legs. I know several people who have used these canine wheelchairs with much success.

If there is anywhere near you that could provide swimming opportunities...always with a therapist to help your pup...it would be great exercise.

Because he has brought more light to my life than I can possible articulate.

He's a shelter rescue and though I have no idea what mix of breeds he is, at 90 pounds (and growing) he's a giant ball of love and wonder.

When people see us out, and say "What kind of dog is that?" I just smile, and say, "The best kind." :-)

47. Beautiful.
Thank you from an atheist and a fat person (to reference the latest topics on DU, and hopefully to open some eyes... ;) ) who believes that dogs have no souls (in the usual understanding) and neither do people, but we must try to stop fear and pain RIGHT HERE AND NOW.

My bona fides: eight dogs max. All shelter or dumped. Count right now is three dogs and one cat. Getting old, can't afford more, nor hope to be alive long enough to do for more.

He has rescued more dogs than we can count...Is living with three of them now,and found homes for the rest of them.

"Wanted, Good Human" sign on dog. Underneath it says "Punish dog abuse, not the dog"

I have always had one or two dogs...and they have "saved" me so often that I cannot even remember all the times.

61. Okay, now it is my turn to gush about my kitties...and kids...
Edited on Mon Nov-24-08 12:29 AM by Journalgrrl
Sheba left us unexpectedly in April 07..we didn't get Shakti until October that year, she had been born the week of our other kittie's death, and we had to wait until we moved into a more pet-friendly place to have her.
She is our cuddler, she makes us laugh, she stalks my hands and feet - she is that wonderful blend between the ball of fluff and fangs. WE all love her, my kids need a pet to care for too, to see how to caretake living things and learn how they act...

Now my daughter is 6, and she has wanted a dog since the day she was born practically. She's addicted to Animal Planet, and wants to be an 'animal saviour' when she grows up (her words)

I am not a dog person, but I have felt my heart softening lately.
We have walked and cared for a friend's dog while they were out of town and the daily walk was a good thing for us to do together. I like the exercise and the time to talk...
But we are renters and can't take on another pet right now, much less the food or vet bills. I have used this as a way to postpone the inevitable, we can't get a dog until mommy BUYS a house I tell them... they know how poor we really are.

So here's the kicker:
My little girl, upon learning that Obama won the very next morning, said
"Now that Obama's President, you'll get a better job mommy and we can buy a house, and I can get a puppy....just like Sasha!!!"

pretty genius for her to figure that out...I'd say she deserves a puppy for the logic alone!

Edited on Mon Nov-24-08 01:42 AM by stark6935
He was so thin you could see his ribs, his ears were raw from fleas/fly bites. When I got him home I probably picked 25 fleas off his face in 1/2 hour. I just sat there looking for them, and they would crawl out from everywhere. He is the nicest dog in the world. I thought I was going to save some money by getting him from a rescue, but the place I got him from was filthy, and I had no idea it would cost me so much... (I think it was a no kill shelter... All the dogs were kept outside.)

My doggie was also a rescue. She was malnurished and had been abused. She saved my life during a house fire and I would spend any amount (even take out a second mortgage) for vet bills if I had too. Now I don't know what I would do without her. She has made me a better person.

76. The wife and I volunteered at a local shelter before we moved
We walked as many dogs as we could every day we had the time. It's heart breaking to see them get so excited whenever anyone walks through the kennel doors, knowing it's impossible to walk them all.

We "fostered" a couple of dogs just to get them out of the kennel for a few days. But how can you put them back in a cage after they've been home? So now we have three, two from the kennel and our eldest we found abandoned on our old block when she was just nine months old.

Go to a shelter and be rescued. Shelter dogs are the best friends you'll ever find. All you have to do is add love and they'll pay you back a thousand times more.

K&R this beautiful story.

77. My Bella saved me
I lost my 14 y.o. Lab in May and I thought I would never love again - it was too painful. He was a very special dog and a very, very special part of my life. He was there with me when no one else was, he protected me from one who would want to do me harm, I never had to teach him "Come" because he was never "away". :( Losing him nearly ruined me.

My husband suggested we consider adopting a dog in August because he was "tired" of seeing me cry in the backyard where Beau and I used to sit. I wasn't sure I was up for it. I wasn't sure I wanted another dog - ever. I couldn't bear the pain. But we agreed to just 'go look' at some shelter dogs. We had been to a couple by the time we went to Buddy Dog. I walked through the kennels thinking they were all cute but that none of them were quite 'mine'.

Then I came to one pen where this little dog cowered at the back of her cage. The name on her sign said "Bella", she was from Puerto Rico. I knelt down and whispered her name. She wiggled her way to me and then, just as in the OP, she would say "I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship."

That is exactly what she did - she leaned her shoulder against the chain link gate, kissing my fingers and pawing at my hands. The shelter staff said she had never done that and in fact, they had to go into her cage to carry her out. She would not walk on a leash (she wouldn't walk at all - just huddled, trembling at every sight and sound.) She came home with us that very night.

I still cry almost every day missing my beautiful Beau but every time I do, Bella comes and buries her head in my chest, kissing my fingers and looking to play. She makes me smile just thinking about her. She has seen anger, abuse and hunger and she has been afraid but these are all in her past now. As little as she is, she tries to protect me but I promise to protect her. I promise she will never starve again and most of all I promise no one will ever lift a hand to her again. She saved me. She let me love again.

112. Adopted a puppy yesterday...
We went to a shelter yesterday after reading online that all the animals at that shelter would be put down on Wednesday and adopted a puppy. They said he is a shepard mix but he is very, very tiny. He fits in the palm of my hand. Well, we have been up all night with him very sick. I have not gotten 1 minute of sleep. He has severe diarrhea, and he is vomiting. Now his diarrhea has turned to blood. We are on our way to the vet but it doesn't look good. It looks like he has parvo. My son got attached quick and is quite upset. I told him that the good thing is that his last day before he got sick he had a few hours of playing, running, and serious cuddling.

116. Update on adopted puppy
I just wanted to update those who are interested: I took the puppy to the vet. His parvo test was negative!! Whoo hooo! He has a very bad worm infestation and that was what they think caused his symptoms. He was very dehydrated and needed to get sub-q fluids to help. Tonight he is feeling much better and his appetite is back with a vengeance. He has also become very playful!

113. I didn't know for a few days if I'd be strong enough to read it
all the way through. I love doggies and kittehs and it kills me to think of any in cages and any being unloved.

I turned out lucky in love, later in life. I just wish that my good fortune were shared by all. There's nothing worse or sadder IMHO than going though life never knowing what real, unconditional love is, either giving it or having it.

Our eldest, Dora the Wonderdog, rescued my partner. The day they found each other, I knew for sure he had decided to fight and stay alive. She was so sick, a 3-1/2 ball of fuzz, and he had just gone through his second cancer operation. "Something Bad" had happened to her mommy (the rescuer wouldn't say) and Dora was too young to be away from her. But she needed somebody fast. At the moment, so did HillbillyBob. But they decided to hang in and live, that love was worth sticking around for. They got better together. Her 7th birthday is coming up in February right on our 13th anniversary.

Our middle one, Ashley-Marie rescued me. We found each other the day after my buddy Sadie crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The half of my soul that didn't belong to my partner had just been ripped away. That night, Dora, HillbillyBob, and I huddled on the couch sobbing; I never knew that dogs cried with sobs, too. The next morning I went to donate Sadie's food to the shelter, and there was that tiny waif in a kennel with four dingoes biting her and bullying her into a corner. I know exactly what it feels like to be trapped in with bullies all around. We sorta rescued each other, healing each other's hearts, like Dora and HillbillyBob rescued each other.

Our tight, loving family rocked on another two years, until we saw someone who needed us. For all that we'd been paid in love, it was time to pay forward. Here's our baby:

Callie, the youngest, aka Callalily. She was starved and her fur was almost gone. Her teeth were a mess and she was scared of most everything. Almost a year later, she has bloomed into a confident, loving, beautiful young lady. She loves playing with her older "sisters" and she loves being brushed now that she has long, luxurious blonde locks :)
