anyone know how to link to SNL clips from Canada?
Edited on Sun Nov-23-08 04:28 PM by jeme
I can't access clips from NBC here. The Huffington Post link does not work here. I want to see the un-aired Rahm Emmanuel clip. Bah.

2. Sorry.
It says it is web exclusive and cannot be seen outside the US.

I can take a screen shot, but I don't know how to capture the entire video. hopefully they will open it for everyone.

4. Try using a web proxy.
Edited on Sun Nov-23-08 04:47 PM by Make7
If you use one that masks your IP address to look like it is from the United States (verify at whatismyipaddress.com), the link to SNL should work. No guarantees though...

You may have to try a few before it works. Try www.hidemyass.com or one of the results of a google search.

DO NOT send passwords or any personal info through a web proxy. Anything you send or receive can be accessed by the people running the proxy.

7. how do these web proxies work?
Do you have to download something or do you just click to get through each time you need it?

14. A web proxy is kind of like an intermediate web site.
You go to a web proxy and enter the web address that you wish to visit. The web proxy server retrieves the information for you (showing its IP address to that website) and then forwards the information to your computer. Many people use them to get around filters at school or work that don't allow users to go to certain sites.

Most sites will function pretty much like you just typed the web address in your browser, but it is not uncommon for some features of the site you are viewing to not come through the forwarding process correctly.

To see if it will work, open a new tab or window with www.hidemyass.com and copy the SNL web address (http://www.nbc.com/Saturday_Night_Live/video/clips/web-exclusive-rahm-emanuel/848721/) into the address bar on their website. It should open up the SNL page on your computer while the web proxy will be showing the NBC website a IP address from the United States.

16. I got to the SNL page
but when I clicked on the Rahm Emmanuel clip I got a generic "page not found" window. So I didn't get any further, but I didn't get the message about not being able to get it in my location. I think later I'll make a project of going through other web proxies.

Thanks. I've learned something I can use. If I cannot get there I will know Homeland Security is on it. :hi:

"we're sorry but the clip you selected is not available from your location". I guess I AM chopped liver.

And you know what else burns my ass? I can't get the Super-bowl commercials up here either. The local channel shows the same mundane crap that is on all the time. Those at least I can get online, but their conspicuous absence really fucks up the experience I want to have of watching the game alongside my fellow Americans. Yeah, sue me, I think the commercials are fun.

World's longest undefended border by ass, TV embargoes, duty on my LL Bean couture on TOP of the GST...what's free about free trade? What has NAFTA done for me lately?

Grump. :grr:

10. I woulud be surprised to know that there's anything in place specifically aiming...
at preventing Canucks from looking at SNL. (Though that might be a funny premise for a skit.)

12. Someone a while back posted a Canadian site for SNL
and I could not access any of the video there.... For whatever that is worth--I don't have the link now.

13. We can watch the show
A local network carries it. The limits to online access after the fact I don't understand.

11. You can see the Detroit automaker's skit at Crooks & Liars...
It is downloadable too. None of the others, sorry

Actually, I find this skit a bit disturbing... Yes, there is truth in it, but I do not want to see 3million autoworkers out of work...

15. Try a Web Proxy
Edited on Sun Nov-23-08 10:32 PM by Canuckistanian
But use an American one. That way, HuffPo's servers will think you're local.

Here's a site to get you started:
http://www.hidemyass.com/ (yes, it's real)

I just tried it myself using an iGoogle proxy gadget.

Ah.... it just hit me. The only way it could STILL see your location is with COOKIES.

I'm too tired to care about it now. I read the transcript. Maybe I will defeat the s.o.b.s tomorrow. I have to herd cats now. Should be relaxing.

18. This is getting really frustrating
Whenever they offer online broadcasts (Desperate Housewives, etc) Canada is blocked out. This just seems so wrong. I'm not that far away from my "home" until I run up against stuff like this and then I feel so distant. It's depressing.

20. Try disabling your cookies
That's the only thing that could possibly be preventing you from seeing it.

If you use Firefox, it's under Tools/Privacy.

people outside the USA to get at the clips. Doesn't make sense to me.

25. it really does
Wonder if it has to do with the local networks who bought broadcast rights here? If it does it will be too arcane for me to grasp. Why did we have to wait YEARS to get HBO? And I am sure that HBO Canada is not the same animal. I'd like to get ESPN too. If I can pay for channels why can't I buy that one?
