5th grade teacher drunk at school

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Instead of facing her students, a fifth-grade teacher must face a judge on drunk driving charges.

Kathy Moegle, 55, of Kansas City, was charged in Independence Municipal Court Monday for driving with a blood alcohol level of .173, more than twice the legal limit in Missouri. Police reports indicate Moegle was also driving without a valid license.

Moegle's case began Monday afternoon when the principal of Blackburn Elementary School, 17302 R. D. Mize Road, suspected a teacher of bringing alcohol to school. The principal confronted the teacher and then notified the Independence police officer assigned to work the school, according to the officer's report.

The officer then told the principal to have someone pick the teacher up. But according to police reports, the teacher refused to call anyone and instead left the building.

That's when the officer spotted the teacher in the parking lot and began a pursuit. The officer pulled the teacher over several blocks from the school, near the intersection of Mo. Hwy. 291 and Hidden Valley Rd.

Another officer went to the school to recover a gallon bottle of alcoholic margarita mix which the principal reported finding on one of his classroom floors.

3. Agreed. Nothing harder than teaching
I taught 6 through 8th graders for ten years, and I am now a counselor. I always say each year I taught took a year off my life.

10. my 8th grade science teacher told us he was drunk in class
he had been on an all night bender and told us to work on our homework while he slept it off in the back office. Said he was an alcoholic and needed to get help. I felt really bad for him. He was gone the next day.

11. I was honestly expecting this to be a teacher at the school near where I grew up.
He teaches fifth grade too. Everybody in the community knows the guy's a raging vodka-for-breakfast alcoholic, but the administration doesn't care. Then again, it's one of those shitty schools in a marginal neighborhood where all of the lifers are fucked up in one way or another, because everybody worth a damn transfers out, and only the kids and the worst teachers are stuck. Anyhow, by now he'll either hit full retirement or advanced liver disease before too much longer, and the problem will go away. The guy's been drunk and teaching since I was a kid.

Which reminds me, I should call my Dad and thank him for scoring me an interdistrict transfer to a school that didn't completely suck and most of the teachers gave a shit.

13. I behave like a fifth grader when I'm drunk - maybe she was just trying some participant-observation
Actually, I feel kind of bad for her: being an alcoholic sucks, losing your job sucks, having the entire country know you lost your job because you're an alcoholic doubly-sucks...

17. We had a seventh grade science teacher who drank.
Everyone knew he drank in school. He was messed up from the Korean War.

A few years after I graduated, he was drunker than usual when he had after school detention duty. He could hardly stand. There was no more hiding it, and he was fired.

Sad. Someone should have tried to help the man.

18. Well, look you don't have to be drunk to teach 5th graders, BUT...
it sure couldn't hurt. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? She teaches it was the Vikings that really discovered America?

Oh shit...

21. Just what does it say about education in this country ...
... that almost everyone here also knows or knew a teacher who drank at work but kept their job?
