Will "24" show us the way, again? |
|
Back in 2001, when "24" premiered, it had a (Democratic) black Senator running for the Presidency. He won. And in later years his brother succeeded him.
I, and many, are convinced that it opened many eyes to the idea that, yes, this country can have a black president in our lifetime.
I just watched this season prequel - no spoilers, not beyond what is known - and the new president is another senator, a woman.
Perhaps not Hillary, but we should expect to have a woman president in our lifetime (for most of us, at least).

1. I was thinking the same thing |
|
Hopefully some of the other things going on in the show will be addressed as well (being cryptic so I don't spoil anyone).

2. So I'm not the only one who thought that? |
|
Well, of course not, but I am convinced, as much as I hate to admit it, that '24' was a pretty big factor, among other factors of course, in getting Americans to the point of accepting a black President when most of us really thought that wouldn't happen in our lifetimes.

4. I have to admit it had an impact.... |
|
those of us who would prefer to downplay the impact of the entertainment media probably need to reassess. I do believe 24 has had an impact. Who looked at the African American President during the first years of that show and didn't become envious at his calm competence....

|
who happened to be black.
Not your Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson type.

8. Yes. Dennis Haysbert. Now in the "Unit" |
|
And I think he got his first exposure to a short time sci-fi series "Now and Again."

9. I also like the way they handle terrorists and suspected |
|
terrorists, and I think they have gone a long way in getting Americans to the point of accepting a certain amount of "enhanced interrogation" when we might be at risk from them. Hey, he saved Los Angeles, He saved hundreds of thousands of lives... Are you going to convict Jack Bauer? Say that criminal law is against him? 'You have the right to a jury trial?' Is any jury going to convict Jack Bauer? I do not think so." (Justice Scalia)
