Alan Stock, the CEO of Cinemark (aka Century Theaters in Evanston and Lakeview), donated $9999 to Yes on Prop 8 because he's a Mormon bigot. Aside from being hateful and wrong, I am floored by what a poor business decision this is. Evanston is a suburb that is widely known to be very liberal and gay-friendly, and part of the Lakeview neighborhood is called "Boystown" for a reason. A huge percentage of the theaters' patronage is gay or totally sympathetic. I pretty much hate every other movie theater near my house, but I guess I will just be renting dvds from now on instead of going to movies.

And it's not just Chicago, Cinemark is a huge company with theaters all over the country (including one of the biggest screens at Sundance).

1. Publicize it!
Get the word out there about this guy and his theaters. It's a great opportunity.

2. There was a big protest over the weekend. That's how I first found out about it.
Now I'm telling DU because there are many Cinemark theaters in the country.

3. Good news: the Landmark on Clark Street is NOT a Cinemark theater
It's in the "Century Center" but it's not owned by Cinemark. There are no Cinemark theaters within the city of Chicago, at least according to their web site.

Boo on the Evanston: that's a really convenient nice theater, but we will boycott it from now on.
