They should have to sleep on the streets without a box!

2. Depending on income level, none of those sound that bad.
I make a decent living and I love to drive.

I'd have a hard time giving up performance sedans.

...so sue me.

5. I wonder how the question was stated to them...
I mean, "What can't you give up" is pretty extreme... What if they phrased it, "What one luxury would you not be willing to give up?"

I'm a blue jeans and t-shirt wearing person and, while I love good food, I could live on beans and rice if I had to...

6. Taking pot shots at celebrities?
Gee, who would that benefit?

The studio heads who believe the same thing, but are too damn untalented/unattractive/boring to warrant camera-time?

Or the celebrities, whose union is deciding whether or not to go on strike against the studios? (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-sag23-2008nov23,0,1126570.story)

Hmm...

7. There were luxuries I was loath to give up when I was poor
One was real maple syrup. I just ate pancakes maybe every couple of months as a treat with the real thing. It just wasn't the same, not even with my chemical free, homemade sugar syrup. It had to be the real thing.

Another was broadband. I'd gotten grandfathered into a cheap connection. Dialup was a few dollars a month cheaper, but not that much cheaper. It was my connection to the rest of the world, my entertainment, my literature, and my music. As I got blinder and my world got smaller, it saved what I laughingly call my sanity.

The last was good shoes, meaning sturdy and well fitting, not fashionable. Taking care of my feet has always been a big deal for me through 25 years of nursing and now that I'm out.

Other than that, if something broke, I fixed it. If it died completely or just plain wore out, I replaced it at a thrift shop or did without.

9. Internet access. I'll give up cable tv before I give up the internet.
It'll be food, rent, utilities, internet, gas and clothes every now & then.

13. I'm with them on the food and the massage therapy
Stress is a killer and anything you can do to relieve it is a good thing. Duffy is right; a massage is better than drugs. ;-)

So, if I had a lot of money, I'd definitely be at the massage therapist's office at least once a week.

And Guilyan chocolate shells aren't really expensive.

Perhaps your concern would be better directed towards what CEO's will 'do without'.

15. To be fair, the question wasn't framed "in this economy.
They were just asked what they can't give up.

I don't begrudge people who earned a lot of money their use of it.

I do begrudge people who fuck up the country as a way to earn a lot of money what they've earned. And that doesn't include entertainment celebrities.
