19. Let's be accurate. Ahmadenejad is a puppet leader.
The job description of the President of Iran is to strut around like a prize rooster, and to handle the minor things that he's allowed to handle by the people who actually run the government. The REAL authority lies with the Ayatollah.

23. Mostly in that it doesn't matter what he actually thinks or would do.
He doesn't actually run the country, and as such isn't the one with the power to do anything, good or bad. He's more like a press spokesman than a head of state. People's outrage should be directed at the real seat of power.

39. I agree with this, as well
We should not be dealing with Ahmadinejad. The Iranian people are very moderate in their Islamic beliefs, and I truly believe that they're on the verge of a cultural revolution. But the current leaders (the Ayatollahs and Ahmadinejad) are not the people we or our representatives should be making deals with.

55. It will completely destroy their own credibility, if nothing else.
Whatever your views on the ethics of extending the hand of friendship to a man as wicked as Ahmadinejad (not a word I think is too strong to describe a man who runs a country where homosexuality is a capital offence), from a purely pragmatic standpoint it's a massive tactical error - it won't change American's views of Iran or vice versa, and it will make most Americans dismiss Code Pink as "friends of Ahmadinejad".

57. Yes, and no, respectively.

Obama is a politician. His meeting people is a matter of substance, and so it makes sense for him to meet as many people as possible, good and bad.

Code Pink are a pressure group. Their meeting people is a purely symbolic gesture, and they should only launch formal meetings like this with people where the effect of the message "Code Pink regard this person as a friend" will be a possitive one, because there's nothing more important at stake.

In this case, it clearly won't be - the message it sends, clearly, is "Code Pink have no perspective, and assume anything Bush is against must be good".

I said nothing about Code Pink, and I generally support their goals, even if I dislike their methods ...

The point is: Going to coddle Ahmadenejad isnt much different than coddling Bush ... different side of the world; SAME mindless adherence to bullheaded religious extremism, and certainly a foe of woman's rights, as well homosexual rights ...

As I said: as much as I dislike the Neocons: Ahmadenejad is hardly much better ...

Medea Benjamin is a kook, and will remain so every day of her life. She might as well be paid by Rush Limbaugh, considering all the effort she puts out trying to prove that all anti-war people are insane suicide doves.

Can't remember her name, but this was fairly recent. She's of Iranian descent and decided to travel to the Old Country to do some dissertation work. Last I heard she was in prison, for doing nothing any free-born American woman wouldn't do, like walk around loose.

I regard Code Pink's current enterprise rather dubiously.

I see it as a publicity stunt- and utterly devoid of any meaning. And that they have the temerity to call it diplomacy is just amusing.

They're really of no consequence. I don't mind them, and sometimes I've rather enjoyed them, but they sure as hell haven't helped move the causes forward, that they undoubtedly believe in.

They were some of the only ones with the "temerity" to stand up against the war crime back when everyone and their fucking dog, including Hilary Clinton, were spoiling for a trillion-dollar, murderous and unprovoked attack on Iraq. They have consistently stood up where others have not.

And going to talk to the "Other," when even supposed Progressives on this board shout them down, is only further testament to the courage of Code Pink.
