The coming suffocation..... |
|
...250,000,000 years ago when the Earth had one land mass, there was an extinction event that killed off 95% of the flora and fauna on the planet. Some researchers theorize that it was a massive rift in the Earth's crust that caused enormous lava flows which elevated the level of greenhouse gases to the point were the planet became oxygen starved. However, a relatively recent suggestion is that the elevated temperatures, the result of little circulation in the interior of the land mass, led to a stagnation of the ocean's currents and circulation and caused the release of CO2 which suffocated both land and sea organisms.
Now there is a concern among researchers that the same phenomenom may occur due to global warming. Although it is highly unlikely that it will occur in the next couple of generations it is worth noting and addressing in the not too distant future.
