They're already going 50% off Christmas things
And it's not even past the holiday season yet. I just went to Kohl's yesterday and saw a huge Christmas display, tons of ornaments and what not - advertised proudly with sales of 50% off, 30% off on towels, etc. I even had to ask a sales associate if it were true, and she said "Yeah, few people have been buying, so we're lowering the prices to get more people to buy them." I guess it just reflects the economic situation - no ones buying the things they love because they simply can't.

2. MrSG told me today that K Mart is going to be open on Thanksgiving
They are very worried about sales.

But I don't see how being open Thanksgiving would help.

People either have money to spend or they don't.

4. Like so many others we can't spend money on things we NEED no less things we
simply love or want. Unfortunately this is a "hard candy" "made do" Holiday season for many and although I try to hold on to the hope and belief that things will eventually get better, I suspect it's going to be "make do" or "do cheap" over the next few years as well for many of us. :(

6. Went to pick up some art supplies Sunday and was shocked to see 50% off
I actually had to think about what day/month it was.

A real shocker with Christmas still a month away.....

7. Methinks the Xmas sales numbers are goings to be very, very bad.

Many smaller retail companies are going to go into bankruptcy or outright liquidation this spring, I fear. Once that happens the dreaded D-Word, Depression, is going to be used more and more...

We are in such deep shit. Thanks Bush, you really fucked us over. :grr:

8. The local Big Lots store is packed
and the department stores are empty, even here in "affluent" Montgomery county, Maryland. Everyone I know is trying to stretch their limited dollars and spend as little as possible.

11. We have SO many store closings here.
Most are small mom-and-pops and many have been here for YEARS. Lauck's Bakery and Miller Sheet Music, both opened in the 1940's closed down. Bilsten's TV & Appliance and Richard's Steakhouse, both open since the 1960's, closed. And the list goes on and on and on. It's scary because we're just at the beginning of this economic "downturn" (in our language, depression). This area has chronic high unemployment anyway - I can foresee 25-30% unemployment here.
