OK, ABC started it. Setting a popular program to end one or two minutes after the hour. For the ones who set their VCR or TiVo to record an hour worth of program.
I don't watch many shows on a regular basis but the ones that I do run opposite each other. Like today, NCIS against "House." We watch NCIS while taping "House."
Since I am still using a VCR (that can skip the commercials) I can program it to any time that I want and recently noticed that "House" is running one or two minutes longer. As I set to program it now, I noticed that today it will run 8 minutes past the hour.

1. Apparently NBC did that last night as well |
|
A friend of mine said that the last 2 minutes of Heroes was cut off on his Tivo.

2. I routinely "edit" my shows I record on my DVR..(we have two that record) |
|
and whenever possible , I just add 10 minutes to both ends of the programs.. I hate it when you have watched a 2 hour movie, and the recording stops 2 minutes before it "ends"..:grr:
There are more and more shows that run from xx:05 to xx:05..they are desperately trying to make us watch those commercials.. but I also have "mute" :)

3. House is running long tonight... |
|
...because it's a special extended episode.

4. You can adjust Tivo to start recording minutes before or after |
|
the hour or half-hour. But you have to know first that the show is starting early or stopping late so you can adjust.

We too like both NCIS and House. My son sets the timer on our dish recorder for House, and today he noticed that it was running over by 8 minutes. I have noticed this on other shows that we did not record but where only a couple minutes of so longer than normal.
Guess they just have to mess with each other at the expense of us poor viewers!

7. At least, we repay them by watching the program recorded |
|
not live and skip all the commercials. Our VCR does most of it automatically.
An hour program without commercials often will run only 45 min.
What was a problem was when Mad Men was still running on Sunday evening, against the Unit. And, depending on how long the NFL game lasted on CBS (at least on the East Coast and the Midwest) every CBS program would be delayed. So we had to watch and then set the Unit to start recording appropriately, often giving it extra 20 minutes, or so, at each end.

6. ABC pulls that stunt all the time. Especially with Lost. |
|
Fortunately, I've learned to check the times on Zap2it.
