That "Homeland" (and its Nazi roots) name has been creeping me out ever since it was adopted. I remember seeing that scene in Fahrenheit 9/11 where * says, "We're going to defend the Homeland" and nearly losing my popcorn. :puke:

30. I think the abolition of DHS...
...combined with the rejuvenance of FEMA and the repeal of the Patriot Act would heighten Obama's political capital greatly. I know of plenty of folks of various political stripes who would be all for it.

4. You mean the Ministry of Fatherland Security?
Yeah, the name has very creepy Third Reich overtones; it's always bothered me. But it needs more than merely renaming: it needs disbanding and its functions returned to their original agencies. Especially the TSA (Thousands Standing Around).

Ministerium des Vaterlandsicherheit... :scared:

15.  Absolutely needs to be evaluated
They cobbled several agencies togther and it is dysfunctional.

I also hate the word, "Homeland"! It just points to the fact that the * admin had no real sense of history and terminology.

FEMA needs to be seperated for sure.

19. RECOMMENDED.
I've said this in every letter to my new DEMOCRATIC SENATOR FROM ALASKA MARK BEGICH (sorry, I feel so GIDDY about that) as well as to letters to any senator or representative I think will listen.

And the TSA is a JOKE. Security pre-9/11 was at least as strong, albeit less visible. The TSA hiring practices are more than a joke, and when a 92 year old woman wearing capris, a t-shirt and sandals without hose is pulled from line for a "security check" it's just an EMBARASSMENT.

Sarah Palin should head Homeland Security and the TSA........... she could pardon one while having the other executed in the background, like her Thanksgiving turkey fiasco.

31. Homeland is creepy. "Domestic security" would be far better.
The agency should be dismantled and some key departments moved into other agencies. Its spoiled brat child, the TSA, should be gutted and rebuilt to focus on real security rather than airport shoe dances.

41. Dissolve The Entire Apparatus!
The Department of Homeland Security came into existence only so that Bush/Cheney could keep the American people in a constant state of fear.

*ith the inauguration of President Obama, the need for a constant state of fear *ill no longer be necessary. President Obama *ill not govern based on fear, but instead *ill govern based on HOPE.

Abolish this terrible relic from the corrupt Bush/Cheney regime!

note: In protest of the continued occupation of the *hite House by the corrupt, illegal, and immoral Bush/Cheney regime, I am refusing to use the letter bet*een "V" and "X".

45. I prefer the original German --
Let's go with the full-throated, Heimat Sicherheitsvorkehrungen ("Homeland Security Measures")

or the more pithy,

Heimat Sicherheitsdienst (Homeland Security Department)

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_hb203/is_/ai_n28953747

But by all means replace the bland, banal, kind of twangy 'American' word, "Homeland," (which sort of sounds like it might have been sung by Burl Ives in a '50's folk song); with the much older, more honest and more deeply rooted (in fear and anger) Teutonic term:

"the defensive structures of a self and of a
Heimat fulfill the same purpose: they provide a sense of ontological security at the expense of those who are not give access because they might threaten this small world--women, Jews, transient workers, those who do not speak the local dialect"
