How nice can we be? Jim Robinson's brother Don Robinson has passed away
Edited on Tue Nov-25-08 09:01 PM by Gman
In Obama's new spirit of unity and non-partisanship, I say may he rest in peace.

Can we be civil and express our condolences? Life is very short for all of us.

35. why don't we be civil and IGNORE fuckwits who would dance on tables when we die?
i'm not trying to be an asshole but c'mon, dude, when i die, when my brother dies, do you think i will get the same from them?

why do we waste energy on stuff like this?

the world would be a better place if hitler was never born, the world would be a better place if far right supporters were never born, to pretend it's a sad day when one of them dies sort of falls in the category of hypocrisy

these people are evil and they vote, no, i'm not sad and i'm not going to pretend i'm sad

can't we be honest even on the internet? jim robinson cannot reach thru yr computer screen and slap the crap out of you for ignoring his brother's death, just...ignore it...let it go

being pathologically nice is the disease of self-hate

70. on an individual level, you don't know that's true
Don could be the liberal member of the family. So he votes Republican and maybe donates some time and money to those causes. Does that make the world a worse place? I don't see how. None of those candidates won by one vote. Even if Al Franken loses by one vote and Don lived in Minnesota that does not make him any more responsible than the other 1.6 million who also voted for the Republican.

For all you know Don is a regular blood donor too. For all you know he worked as an EMT or a fireman saving lives. You do not have knowledge of what he has done for good in this world, or how often.

I think the world would be a better place if there was less hate in it.

Edited on Wed Nov-26-08 02:33 PM by Evoman
I can understand having a memorial or thread about a dead DUer, or even someone famous, but the brother of some guy who owns a website that is diametrically opposed to everything a decent person believes in.

Count me out.

On further though, becaues I don't want to completely shit on your thread, I'll just say this: I'm not happy the guy died. And it really sucks for Jim. But I still don't get it.

66. It's not about being better than them
Losing a family member is a horrible experience, and it's at the very least civil to offer condolences.

It has nothing to do with politics or ideology. It's about being decent human beings.

Best wishes to Jim and his family during this difficult time.

68. I've lost family members....I lost my cousin over 2 years ago.
yeah, it's horrible, but I would have found some freepers pontifacting over it and pretending to feel bad even worse.

And if one of them had said, "Wtf, I don't even know this girl", I could at least give them points for honesty.

It is about "being better than them". It's a self-aggrandizing circle-jerk. There is nothing decent about it. If you all really felt bad, you should have emailed him your condolensces privately.

71. to an extent we are part of the same community
We know Rimjob because we talk about his site - a lot, and some DUers read his site - a lot, and share some of what they read here. The thread about his brother was one of the things read and one of the things shared. So this thread gives us an opportunity to rise above politics and recognize our common humanity.

Thus, if FR talked about you a lot and you posted a thread about your cousin it would not reflect badly on them for sympathizing.

that's all we're doing here. Yes, our politics are diametrically opposed, but we are all people with our own loved ones. We're not trying at all to be better than anyone. We're just acknowledging the sorrow another family in this world is experiencing, regardless of their politics. That's all.
