Tahoe Hybrid SUV named 'Green Car of Year'

The winner of a coveted environmental award is... a full-sized SUV? GM's new hybrid impresses judges with efficiency.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The winner of this year's Green Car of the Year doesn't look a thing like the award's past winners. It's a full-sized SUV.

General Motors' (Charts, Fortune 500) Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid took home the 2008 award from the Green Car Journal for its outstanding gas mileage compared to its competitors, the magazine said the Thursday.

"This is a milestone in many respects," said Green Car Journal editor Ron Cogan in a statement. "People don't think 'green' when SUVs are concerned, and for generally good reason since SUVs often get poor fuel economy compared to most other vehicles. Chevrolet's Tahoe Hybrid changes this dynamic with a fuel efficiency improvement of up to 30 percent compared to similar vehicles equipped with a standard V-8."

In the city, where many SUVs spend the bulk of their time, the 6.0 liter two-mode Hybrid achieves 50 percent better fuel economy than a standard Tahoe with a 5.3-liter V-8. The Tahoe's 21 mpg in the city is the same as the city rating for the four-cylinder Toyota Camry.

1. Green is just a word.
I canceled my Design News subscription in 1992 over this issue.

Until we get real, we're going to continue down the same road.

50 percent better than shit is still shit.

I really like talking about this subject. But I'm hardcore left on it all. I can't even express my opinions here without getting slammed. Basically, we either live with nature, or we kill it. And cars are not green.

10. A sad joke, are you kidding me?
I'd sure as hell like to get just over 20mpg city as appose to the 16mpg average my truck gets.

I posted this last night and was thinking about that today.

We are infiltrated by some real scum around here.

12. It could get 50mpg and the 'fuck the American worker' crowd still wouldn't be satisfied.
Especially when it comes to anything SUV. We had a Tahoe, it was very nice and we would have kept it had it delivered 20 mpg. We hated giving it up.

So I can avoid doing any business with their companies.

When I pull up to some place of business and the employee parking lot is full of foreign cars, (and I do check) I go do my business elsewhere.

Even if it costs me more money to do so.

25. Our '99 Subaru was built in Indiana. At the time GM was the majority owner of Subaru.
(I understand GM sold its stake in Subaru last year.) Is it a "foreign" car, if American labor builds it and most of the profits don't "go to Japan"?

22. News flash, cars have gotten heavier and more powerful.
Edited on Wed Nov-26-08 08:19 PM by CRF450
Though an engine capable of 400hp doesn't automatically make it a gas guzzler. Hell the Corvettes make that much power and get 30mpg real easy on the highway. Emission standards have also kept a plug on fuel milage increases. I could get better fuel milage with a good twin turbo setup on my v8 powered car which already gets 22-23mpg on average, but is it going to pass emissions? Nope.

27. OK, you got me with that one..
Honest honey, if I put the twin turbos on I'll get better gas mileage..

Whether it's objectively true or not doesn't matter, it's still funny.

You ain't foolin' this ol' hot rodder, you don't want twin turbos for the gas mileage.

Right now we have a Buick Century. Terrific car. Had a Volvo and sold it.

If you don't like cars you won't be forced to drive one. Walk!

But, just don't get in my way when I'm drivin!

7. I ride a bike about 20 miles per day.
But just so that I am not a complete hypocrite, I do own vehicles. I just don't like them. I've got a rare Porsche and an F-350 dually four door 4wd.

No, I'm the pig you see on the road. But I just don't drive. I put on 1000 miles per year. And to be honest, that includes moving to get the hell away from the people in cars. And to be REALLY honest, I would ride my bike almost everywhere, if it weren't for the stinkin' cars.

So, yeah, I am part of the problem. But just not a flagrant part.

17. now THAT is something that should be implemented
Every day I see these big-assed roadhogs on the highway with ONE person. ONE. Or the monster sized trucks being driven into the city with ONE person, a guy in a SUIT.

Size and weight tax would definitely be a plus.

That said, this magazine looks more like it was put together to suck up ad dollars from manufacturers than to inform consumers.

so maybe it's a joke

Invited jurors in the competition included Carroll Shelby, Jay Leno, Carl Pope (Sierra Club), Christopher Flavin (Worldwatch Institute), Jonathan Lash (World Resources Institute) and Jean-Michel Cousteau (Ocean Futures Society).

28. You can increase the Tahoe's MPG even further by building a diesel version.
A diesel engine, on average, is roughly 30% more fuel efficient than a comparable gasoline engine of the same size. A diesel-electric hybrid Tahoe should be even more fuel efficient.

30. I have a non-hybrid car that gets better mileage than this piece of crap.
Talk about tone-deaf when gas was $4 a gallon. We need hybrids; we just don't need hybrid SUVs. They use almost as much gas as the real thing. Fuck that shit. If they raised the CAFE standards and treated SUVs as cars and not trucks in that formulation, automakers would need to do much better than this.

32. And what line of business are you in so I can avoid your services?
I am sure I can find whatever you produce cheaper and better from some other country if I looked around.

Maybe you are in the service industry? Perhaps we could increase the H1-B visas and get someone in here to do your job a little cheaper?

What goes around ...
