I remember posts advocating vaporizing (physically) the Somali pirates. Are the Wall Street pirates |
|
deserving of the same treatment (or worse, since they have stolen more and hurt more people) according to those posters? I was horrified when I read those posts, especially because the pirates started their crime spree as a consequence of Somalia becoming a lawless state and the Western fisheries stealing all the fish from their coast (of course, they have gone overboard, no pun implied). I agree the pirates cannot be allowed to continue, but vaporizing sounded horrible to me.

1. What do you suggest to prevent the piracy if not force? |

2. We could reason with them, and give them money. |
|
I'm sure they are just very misunderstood.

3. What Wall Street did is piracy. So what force do you want to use? nt |

6. You don't understand that the two are very different situations? |
|
Not all bad things/people can be dealt with in the same manner.

7. So only Somalis that cannot find anything to eat and resort to crime can be vaporized but thieves |
|
that are fat cats and do it within a context of the robber baron culture can go on with impunity? I am not advocating vaporization but it amazes me how violence is the first thing that comes to mind when it is "the other" who commit the crimes.

9. It will take a combination approach to deal with the pirates |
|
1) The Somali Government (almost non-existant)needs to be stabilized and the warlords power removed before anything can improve.
2) It will take a security force to stop what is now seen as easy money, the Somali's do not have such a force right now.
3) Relief needs to come to the people in the form of food and shelter.

10. I am so glad you are not one of the vaporizers! Your three steps make a lot of sense, even though |
|
I don't see much probability of that happening. Somalia does not have much that the West wants to warrant a humane treatment. But thanks for your answer.

Solutions are rarely simple or singular. Often it takes a multi-sided approach to have a successful outcome. This is why Bush has been such a failure. He sees things in black or white, takes a singular action rather then a holistic approach.
I am hopeful Obama will see things in a much broader perspective and help solve some of the original issues as well as issues that came about due to Bush's lack of real wisdom.
When it comes to places like Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur, yes there is force needed, but force alone fails, all of them need a multi-pronged approach to gain the best income for the people who live there.
