Obama: "Girly Dog" Not For Our Family
In his interview with ABC's Barbara Walters, Barack Obama talked to her about her dog and his own puppy preferences. Politico reports that the host actually sent the Obama's a photo of her pet, but it doesn't seem to be the President-elect's type.

Obama: "Cha Cha?"

Barbara: "It's short for Cha Cha Cha."

O: "What is a Havanese?"

B: "It's like a little terrier and they're non-allergenic and they're the sweetest dogs.."

O: (Face suddenly changes.) "It's like a little yappy dog?"

Michelle: "Don't criticize."

O: "It, like, sits in your lap and things?"

M: "It's a cute dog."

O: "It sounds kinda like a girly dog."

M: "We're girls. We have a houseful of girls."

O (with hand gestures): "We're going to have a big rambunctious dog, of some sort."

Nothing against little "yappy" dogs, but I'm with Obama on this one. I like bigger dogs too. But I bet if the girls want a little dog - he'll bend.

33. I'm girly

but I prefer a larger dog. A standard poodle wouldn't be a bad choice (provided they forgo the cut one sees at the Westiminster Dog Show).

On the other hand, when it comes to small dogs, terriers are a different class entirely. I've never met one who didn't think they were the size of a German Shepard.

I'll bet what he calls a "girly dog" is what I call a "foo-foo" dog.

And so sexist to boot! Female dogs come in all breeds--including the rambunctious ones--or there wouldn't be a breed.

It's pretty silly to call sexism because he simply said "isn't that a girly dog"?

I didn't call him a sexist. The comment, yes. I was just clarifying the intent of the statement. And I didn't want to imply that the person I was responding to in this thread was wrong about how that person perceived the comment.

I can't stand those yappy little dogs. It's a living being, dammit - not a friggin' fashion accessory. I prefer big, lovable mutts. Pugs do fall into the "so ugly they're cute" category, but I wouldn't want a purebred: too much genetic baggage.

122. You're right hehe sorry. I remember something about dogs from the Isle of rhodes
Maybe it was about Mollossans? But they are thought to have been turned into mastiffs, etc.

Hmmmm. It's a strong memory too. I could be trippin sorry. Here's a cool and sad story though:

"The Molossian breed was most certainly a very large dog similar to the Mastiff we know today, Alexander the Great's dog named Peritas was a Molossian. Peritas followed Alexander throughout his epic conquest. When Alexander was trapped alone on the wrong side of the Mallians fortification, his men were blocked from reaching Alexander momentarily, Leonnatus fighting fiercely heard Peritas howl and bark from behind him, and without looking back shouted "go Peritas ! run to Alexander!" the fearless dog ran through the men fighting and lept into the group of Mallians who had just wounded the king in the shoulder with a javelin, Peritas killed several men giving the men time to get Alexander, and stop them from slaughtering him. But, the brave dog had been mortally wounded with a javelin as well, with Peritas' last strength he laid his head on the wounded king's lap and gazing into his master's eyes died."

34. My neighbors have a little yappy dog.
They put it out early in the morning. It doesn't matter if it's a weekend, holiday, if people are in bed sick, etc., out it goes. 5:45 to 6:00 AM every morning.

YAP YAP YAP YAP YAP YAP YAP.

It goes to the potty, then it wants back inside. So, it stands at the door, peering in:

I'm with Barack on this one. Big dogs don't seem to bark as much, and when they do, it's usually for a good reason. (At least in my experience. Another neighbor has a big dog, and you only hear him bark when there's someone around he doesn't know.)

80. "Another reason I don't keep a gun in the house"
I agree with America's former Poet Laureate:

Another Reason Why I Don't Keep A Gun In The House

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
barking, barking, barking,

and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven
had included a part for barking dog.

When the record finally ends he is still barking,
sitting there in the oboe section barking,
his eyes fixed on the conductor who is
entreating him with his baton

while the other musicians listen in respectful
silence to the famous barking dog solo,
that endless coda that first established
Beethoven as an innovative genius.

Billy Collins

101. Your neighbors need a dog door if they are too lazy to let the little one back in after he/she goes
potty. All four of my 'yappy' dogs make great use of the dog door.

Nice doggie, fit in a tea cup, no problem with exercise or "walkies."

In 8 years, Obama can have a great big dog. Till then, he will barely see that animal in passing.

AND IT'S THE GIRLS' DOG!!!!! THEIR reward. HIS promise.

49. We had a discussion like that here.
I said I'd want a little cat-sized dog, if any dog at all.

H2S said no, if we get a dog it should be a *DOG*!!!

So the debate was about (spoken in a high pitched little voice)"dog" vs. a (spoken in a low, loud pronouncement voice) "DOG."

Then H2S Jr. #1 landed us with a border collie he couldn't keep, and H2S Jr. #2 added a German shepherd he couldn't keep.

So I lost that one. (Love the dogs now -- just hate the shedding.)

Description: Doris was "left over" at a dog auction. That means she was not sold. Usually that also means a quick trip to the vets to see Jesus. SHe is very playful and loves to be held, petted and cuddled. She gets along well with our other dogs, cats and the local kids. SHe just needs someone to love.

 ...is to get each of them their own dog. Little hypo-allergenic doggies for those who want the little lap-type doggies. Big poodle or labradoodle or golden doodle for those who want big, rambunctious type.

I see a definite need for 4 doggies in the white house. All formerly homeless. All colors, sizes, and creeds...B-)

I always thought if you are going to get a dog(former cat person) then get A DOG! Get a real dog! Then, hubby brings home a dog a from a friend, some kind of designer dog-A Silkese-Silky Terrier/Maltese. Believe it or not, it is SHORT-haired! I wanted to kill my hubby! Thought I'd be cleaning up dog poo for the rest of my life. And, then after a few weeks, that dang little thing swept my heart away, and now I can't imagine life without her! SMALL DOGS-BIG HEARTS! 96. We thought that we were getting a miniature poodle
and ended up with a toy, which I never would have consciously chosen. My mistake. She was NOT a yappy dog at all and had the heart of a lion, with a deep bark to boot. It was hilarious when someone who didn't know about her would knock at our door. She would bark once or twice to let us know that we had a visitor and when we would open the door, their eyes would first aim at our waists, then go down, and down again ... and the looks of astonishment on their faces when they finally realized where the deep sounds had come from were priceless.

She travelled across the country with us and to two other continents. Everywhere she went, she ended up with a major fan club, even and especially with people who were not "dog" people. We were blessed for 16+ years, until 1993, and I still miss her.

Son No. 1 had a Rhodesian ridgeback mix that he rescued from the DC animal shelter. The dog was there because he had accidentally been shot in the leg in SW DC and his owner couldn't afford to pay the vet fees. Son had actually gone to the shelter to choose a cat for his wife, but he saw the dog, heard the story and it was love at first sight. It was also a wonderful dog and absolutely marvelous with children. They had nine good years with him but finally had to put him down early this year because of untreatable and inoperable prostate cancer. My son, now in his 40s, literally sobbed when he told me. I cried too.

Oh, and my son had to turn around and go back the shelter a second time for the cat because he totally forgot it the first time around! The dog and the cat got along fine.

Whatever breed/mix the Obama family chooses, it will be one lucky dog.

In my lifetime, I've had a Schnauzer and a Poodle-both yappy dogs-and a Springer Spaniel and the Springer was by far the best dog I've ever had-nothing yappy about Springers-just the most devoted and loving dogs ever and so much fun! Too bad Springers aren't hypo allergenic!

So my vote is for an Airedale or Giant Schnauzer. They are both adorable!!!

131. A Beauceron dog would be perfect for Obama!
Beauceron is lovely and so regal. I have two big dogs. Shania is 10 months old pure-bred beauceron and Rocky is 17 months old rescue ... rott and german shep mix.

Beauceron is rare in USA, there are approx. 500 registered beauceron dogs in USA. They are French herding dogs that are used for police, service, etc. they were used in WWII in France and were almost extinct. Obama would love my Shania. Such a beauty and they're highly intelligent. Shania's mother was imported from France as well as her grandparents. Her father was born in California same as Shania where I got from.

A beauceron dog would fit in perfectly with Obama!

My girly "dogs" are 4 cats :hi:

and I am a girl
