Is Prop 8 backlash keeping Utah out of college football's national championship?
The kids at Utah committed there before anyone had ever heard of Prop 8, much less knew that it was financed by Mormons.

As far as I know, they've never done anything bigoted or mean-spirited.

All they've done is play their hearts out.

They're one of two major college teams that's undefeated.

Meanwhile, half a dozen teams with one loss are more are getting a chance to play in college football's national championship game, depending on what happens on the field in the next couple of weeks.

Prop 8 was a very bad thing.

But adding another injustice to the mix won't help anything.

by Vick--regardless of his horrendous animal cruelty/torture convictions, somehow, I am not surprised to see that college football is considered sacrosanct, even when civil rights are decimated as a result...

Look, I like sports and hate for a team that has worked hard to excel to ever feel disappointment, but geebus, I think a much more important life lesson might come from this...

5. And they had a MUCH weaker schedule.
Utah plays in the Mountain West conference, stacked wall-to-wall with "powerhouses" like BYU, Wyoming, and Texas Christian. Alabama plays in the toughest conference in the NCAA, the SEC. Alabama has had to play Georgia, Auburn, LSU, and Tennessee this year.

Strength of schedule matters.

12. Prop 8 is not keeping Utah out of the national title game,
what is keeping them out of the national title game is the BCS. Utah is not from a major football conference(BCS conference), they are from a mid-major conference (nonBCS conference), and to even make it into a BCS bowl game they would have to be ranked number 12 or 16 and ranked in front of a BCS conference team in the BCS polls, which is based on Sports writers and coaches polls and then a computer generated poll. It is difficult for a NonBCS team to make it into a BCS Bowl. Their are special rules set up for Notre Dame but I will not go into them here. Only 3 nonBCS teams have made it to a BCS bowl game, Utah, Boise State, and Hawaii. To make it into the National title game you must be ranked either number one or two in the final BCS poll of the season.

13. NO.
Edited on Wed Nov-26-08 05:32 PM by Cali_Democrat
Utah is not in one of the 6 major BCS conferences. The six major conferences are the SEC, Big 12, Pac10, Big East, ACC, and Big 10. Each of these conference's champs have an auto bid to a major BCS bowl (Rose, Orange, Fiesta etc.). That is not the case for the other conferences.

Utah is in the Mountain West Conference. It would be nearly impossible for a team that isn't from one of the 6 big conferences to make the national title game.

This has nothing to do with Prop 8. Just look at Boise State 2 years ago. No matter what they do, they will be perceived as having a weak schedule whether it's true or not.

3 at large bids + 5 conference. However, I believe an undefeated, small conference team that is ranked in the top 10 has an automatic bid to a BCS bowl like Hawaii last year. However being WAC does pretty much eliminate them from the so called "title game".

14. The BCS is determined
in part by mathematical analysis, though "opinion" rankings make up some of it. In the opinion polls, though, they ask sportswriters and coaches, rather than the general public. I'd have a hard time believing that such a groundswell of support for the gay community exists among these groups that they can skew their own part of it enough to affect the overall poll.

21. So your contention
is that sports writers and college coaches (who are both disproportionally white males) are conspiring to keep the Utes out of a BCS game? Really? You don't want to re-think that even a little bit? Because while it is not quite as silly as the notion that giant, man-eating lemurs run the Pentagon, it's pretty close.

Actually, I take that back. At least the lemurs running the Pentagon rumor has the fact that lemurs are known for their support of space-based missile defenses going for it. Yours doesn't have any evidence that plausible.

UCLA has 100 National Championships, SC is second, in the 90's, I believe Cal and Stanford have over 50, and Arizona State was ranked highest in overall sports rankings for last year.

As for the 'Paid player comment toward SC, I agree, SC FUCKING SUCKS WEENIES, the play by the same set of rules as Florida, Miami, LSU, Georgia, Oklahoma.

I see that all the time, when a Mod locks a thread at the request of an OP...usually because the OP realized it was an error, or flat out wrong or so completely stupid and offensive...or they were being a drunken fool at the time (nice excuse BTW)

It would be refreshing and a nice gesture to see "thread locked at the request of, and apologies by, the OP"

So far, don't see that happening....and you have been here long enough to know that is absolutely possible.

Duke plays (or so they say) in the Atlantic Coast Conference, one of the BCS conferences. I've heard rumors the Detroit Lions are planning to add Duke to their schedule next year, on the grounds their fans need to see the Lions win at least one game every year.

You guys want to hear a really funny one? I like one of the Raleigh radio stations, and last week they had an ad for the Duke-UNC football game. Only $40 per ticket! That's like buying a ticket to the Colosseum when they fed Christians to the lions! Who the fuck would pay $40 to watch Duke play football against anyone? Come on. They lost to Navy. 56. Yes.
Teh Gay Agenda is amazing. We can change the outcome of football games, destroy traditional marriage, cause all manner of natural disasters. But for some reason we still can't manage to get equal rights.

BTW, BYU isn't as innocent and sweet as you seem to think. They think they're God's special football team and everyone else is sh*t under their feet.

How can we expect interfaith dialogue when we can’t even have Interstate dialogue between two Mormon universities 45 miles apart because they have literally turned religion into a political football? When the secular University of Utah played its religious school rival, Brigham Young University (BYU), last weekend, the teams treated the End Zone as if it were the Promised Land.

“It’s like a lot of other rivalries, except for those at the extremes,” Michael Anastasi, managing editor of the Salt Lake Tribune told the New York Times. “For them, it’s not only that your school is weak, you’re going to Hell too.”

Two years ago, the rivalry was further soured after BYU quarterback John Beck threw a touchdown pass to receiver Jonny Harline, who sank to his knees – as if in prayer – to make the winning catch. Describing the “miraculous” play, another B.Y.U. receiver, Austin Collie, concluded it occurred because students at the religious school lived cleaner lives.

“Obviously, if you do what’s right on and off the field, I think the Lord steps in and plays a part in it,” said Collie.(For the record, the holier-than-thou BYU was crushed 48-24 in this weekend’s game. I’m guessing the Lord was upset at Mormon involvement in California’s Prop. 8 banning same-sex marriages)

From Wayne Besen's Truth Wins Out

Gee, maybe Wayne is on to something. Perhaps BYU needed to be knocked off their self-righteous pedestal by their own god.

Whatever it was, it certainly wasn't Teh Gays that made them play a crappy game.

It's because they play in the Mountain West Conference. I sympathize a little because they did beat Michigan in the Big House - even though they were horrible this year - and beat Oregon St who might win the Pac 10 plus a couple top 25 teams in conference. They would definitely have a couple losses if they played in the Big XII. I hope they get a chance to show what they can do in a BCS game, but they just don't belong in the national title game. Texas, Oklahoma, Florida are just better teams.
