39. Obviously you've never owned a terrier before. They epitimize "little big man syndrome"
Utterly macho and fierce. Yet loyal and incredibly loving within their "pack".

I think it's humorous the way people want to characterize ALL little dogs as girly when the terriers are bred to be batshit crazy warriors (against little prey like rats, badgers, foxes etc.).

Terriers are crazy! I challenge anyone to characterize any terrier as "girly".

63. "little big man syndrome"--exactly!
I have a Westie and she exudes such a cock-sure attitude that a German Shepherd and Rottweiler who walk by every day always go to the end of their leashes--away from her--to avoid setting her off. Not that she does anything but stand there, mind you. Westies are the happiest of dogs and great with kids--plenty rambunctious, though not really lap dogs. They can be stubborn little Scots and need to be taught they are not the boss, but as rider said, they are fierce hunters. Pound for pound, what other dog would willingly drag a badger out of its den--and win? Great watch dogs (though easily won over by anyone with a smile, so not guard dog material) and the double coat means they don't shed everywhere. IMHO, a terrier of any kind would be a great choice.

Of course, I'm biased. . .

They're both wonderful family dogs, very energetic and playful. Plus, they are incredibly tough and muscular for such little dogs! Perfect choice! Those girls are just so smart! :)

5. Irish Terriers should be on that list. I had one and although she wasn't a "girly-dog"
she was very difficult to train as a puppy. She was incredibly stubborn. She came out of it at about a year and was wonderful, but that year was a long time coming.

8. I have shown Irish Terriers and have three now.
They are not the best dog for most people. And I would have a heart attack if the President got one and then there was a high demand for them. This breed is not very common, but the puppy millers would gear up and ruin the breed.

A Westie or two would be fine for the Obamas, especially if they got them from a shelter or rescue.

a genetic defect. Her pads were all disfigured.

I would hate to see puppy mills breed them too.

That must have been a long time ago. It has practically been bred out now.

ITs are actually a very healthy breed. But still they are descended from a very small population in the US.

It's great that it's been bred out.

Maggie was very healthy otherwise until she turned 14. She developed tumors and suffered from kidney problems. For her last year I was giving her subcutaneous fluid treatments every day along with Reiki.

Girliest dog that'll kick his a$$ and leave him wondering what happened.

I think he meant what we call a "froo froo" dog. My pup (part Basenji) is the girliest dog I've ever had - she also slammed me full on in the stomach yesterday right after Thxgvg dinner. (My sister offered to pick me up off the floor once I could breath again. :))

(I joke - novice dog owners should not try a Basenji and I really hope the Obamas get a dog they will enjoy - hopefully one from a shelter or rescue.)

They look good in the snow.

They have a sense of humor I think the Pres. Obama would appreciate:

And he wouldn't have to worry about it being a lap dog, as they need their own couch.

And the fawns are lovely:

The one below that is a sample of not very photogenic... they are much more loveable than that photo.

The one with the bench... that wasn't humor... it's just that when you're that large, scratching your belly is a challenge. ^_^

And the couch one... My "Boo" used to love to lay in front of the fridge, on his back, with his paws leaning on the fridge dooor. I think he was a bit territorial about the fridge... hehehehe

70. Part of the standard for the breed...
"Ears placed high and alert. If cropped, they are to be a triangular contour and in proportion to the size of the head. The inner corner of the ear should be in line with the outer corner of the eye. Ears that are too low or too closely set are serious faults. Skull well developed and flat, slightly less wide than long. When viewed from the side, the top lines of the skull and the muzzle are parallel. It is wide between the ears, with the frontal groove barely marked. The stop is more apparent than real, due to upstanding eyebrows. The proportions of length of skull to length of muzzle are 3 to 2."
http://www.akc.org/breeds/bouvier_des_flandres/index.cfm

A large well-shaped head is something most judges look for. It was what won my oldest bouvier a second in group once. He has a gorgeous solid, broad, well-shaped head. When people look for a show puppy, that is one of the things they look for. Females usually have smaller skulls, but that makes sense as they should be in proportion to the body.

A close friend of mine has a litter due the week before Christmas. She said she'd be happy to let one of them spend the rest of their life with the Obama family. The timing is just about perfect. They'd be ready to head to their new home right around Inauguration Day! We were talking/joking about it yesterday and laughed. She was kidding me about pulling some strings to get the deal done...like I have any strings to pull LOL. We both agreed it would be an incredible honor to have one of her puppies be a First Dog. Apparently she wrote the PE a letter after the election (not about the puppy), but about how much hope she had for the future since he was elected. I was impressed, as she was one of my McLame converts.

Hear, hear...a bouvier to the White House! Hell, Belgium would be happy!

Properly socialized and trained, they're terrific playmates ... for both the kids AND Barack. They're not Einsteins (to say the least) but they know the difference between children and adults and can moderate their rambunctuousness appropriately.

VERY well put!

Our Boovie could run my ex and his 5 college friends to a frazzle, until they surrendered.

But go into the house and be sooo gentle and loving to the baby.

"They're not Einsteins "

HARRUMPH!! I beg to differ! ^_^

As I said earlier, we didn't even train ours.... he was so eager to please, and so smart, he trained himself... he knew what we wanted. He was four months old when given to us, and had never been inside a house! He knew right away to let us know when he wanted to go out.... NEVER had an accident. I'm willing to Bet even Einstein had an "accident" or two...

Girls are awesome, things associated with the female gender are nothing to be ashamed of, and dog breeds are just that, dog breeds.

While I'm not going to pull a "pronoun-gate" on the guy and attack everything he stands for, I just thought it was a little bit inappropriate for Obama to say something like that.

While I still love our new president elect, I didn't really like the nature of the comment for the reasons I listed in this post:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=7930501&mesg_id=7931039

He could have stated that he wanted a larger, heartier breed, or something like that, without the gender based put down.

That said, I'm a girl, and have always owned pit-bulls, shepherds, great danes, dobermans, (or mixes thereof) etc, simply because I want a hearty, large, high energy athletic dog that makes a good running partner and can keep up with me.

So, maybe pit bulls and dobies, etc. are "girly dogs"?

20. Because Barack and Michelle were ribbing each other on Barbara Walters,
Barack saying he didn't want a little, girly-dog (or a yapper, or a lap-sitter) -- he wants a large, rambunctious dog; and Michelle pointing out that there is nothing wrong with girls, the house is full of girls.

I sympathize with Barack. Since my daughter left, my house is full of boys, and I could have at least used a girl dog. (But we ended up with another boy.)

It's not about the gender of the dog, it's about the perceived femininity of the owner.

38. There are no "hypo-allergenic dogs" according to my vet.
People with allergies react to different breeds of dogs differently. Each person has a unique allergic threshold.
The dander is the problem to people with allergies not the hair. So-called hypoallergenic dogs still produce allergens but certain coat types will produce less than others.

52. Definitely the Standard Poodle. Nothing can beat its intelligence
and athleticism. Just keep it cut short and let it be a doggy dog. They're sweet and funny and can run so fast and jump so high.

60. We just got a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
He's handsome and adorable and non-shedding. As an adult he'll be 19-20 inches tall and weigh up to 40 pounds. Not girlie and a medium sized dog.

62. For allergies, dogs should be hyperallergenic, smallish, and bathed frequently
but not too frequently that the bathing causes skin problems. Then, you'll have more dander - not less!

64. I'm sure the Obamas have enough money
To hire a good dog groomer. Keeping the critter clean and clipped will minimize dander.

I favor poodle mixes myself - they're smart, affectionate dogs, and with a "kennel cut" there's nothing foo-foo about them.
