I think I would research this kind of thing before I ever went on vacation outside of the US.

Thats not something I would want to find out about with an AK-47 pointed at my head.

1. Is that the truth? Or just official policy?
Because the U.S. says it doesn't negotiate with terrorists....

4. i would hope this would be the policy of all nations
Edited on Wed Nov-26-08 07:04 PM by pitohui
when you negotiate to "free" hostages you guarantee that there will be more and more and more hostages and more and more of these tragedies in the future because you have provided a pay off

the usa claims not to negotiate, as does israel, would you hesitate to visit either nation?

8. The US has negotiated to free hostages and everyone knows that
Israel has too.

This is not a case of semantics here.

11. Did he bother to research that?
http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/library/news/2000/01/000106-hijack1.htm

TEXT: Five armed hijackers took over the plane during
the Christmas holiday on a flight from Katmandu
Airport in Nepal. After a wild and dangerous series
of stopovers, the plane ended up in Kandahar,
Afghanistan, where Indian government officials
negotiated the release of the 155 passengers and crew.
Although the Indian government said it would not
negotiate with terrorists, it eventually released
three Kashmiri militants from Indian jails in return
for the people aboard the plane, and safe passage from
the scene for the hijackers.

12. After Indira Gandhi's assasination, Americans were caught
really off guard... Mass chaos and many stationed in New Delhi officially had to hunker down in their very insecure housing for very extended periods. Even on a good day, continuous power is iffy, even in New Delhi. Since that time all officially stationed long term US staff are housed in homes with "safe rooms" and generators. I worked there for an extended period in the late 90s and that was always a potent remind to let folks know where you were, even as you "settled in and became more comfortable with surroundings."

And, yes, I believe they are told that India does not negotiate and to keep that in mind before heading outside their homes and offices, should another "incident" occur. Despite being the world's official largest democracy, India is a patchwork of simmering factions... Partition in 1948 was, but the beginning of these periodic eruptions.

I hate seeing this news and feel very very helpless, just as I did here on 911 and with the train bombings that followed in Madrid. Damn...
