You're a role model now and you've gotta show respect for all the women that voted for you. Sounding like Arnold the grabber doesn't help you.

43. :) Yup, and that's why "some of us" bring the uninvited mutts over for a visit when
"some of us" don't care for the little doggies and don't think of them as mini stuffed animals with a real bark. To each their own, in their own homes.

69. You did it didn't you. Probably wanted to share your coffee and bagel with a friend and took Tookie
or Snookie for a walk to your friend's house. You entered the house all happy and pulled the mini mutt from your oversized purse. Then your pooch barked at anything that moved, scared the resident cats and took a dump on the door mat. Ok, well, just giving you the alternative view. The behind the scene thing where once the poop is cleaned up and you leave to go home, the friend rolls their eyes and sighs cuz' they're too nice to say anything.

And enjoy your big dog who will ultimately make a bigger mess than any little dog. And you probably wouldn't clean up after your big dog and your friend would be rolling eyes, too nice to say anything. See how that works.

4. Obama is under siege. He is surrounded by women - his wife
Her mother, the two girls.

This is not an easy place to be. I relate, as some aspect of my girl psyche is still under the power of memories of those years when my home was invaded by my son and his five or six burly young men friends.

I am willing to cut Obama some slack. He will need it.

52. A word can be homophobic in one context, but not another.
If someone is described in a mocking way as liking pink, it may well be homophobic.

If someone sincerely says he or she likes pink, it is not.

82. True - however I take issue with using human gender narratives on a dog
what is masculine or feminine in the dog world is not in any way shape or form transferable to humans or vice versa. We may place these terms on dogs, however the term means more about the owner of the dog than the pet - pets do not naturally were clothes or jewelry or ride around in handbags - humans do all that to their dogs.

49. I've heard it used to slur men who are feminine, but not women or, more specifically,
lesbians.

In other words: it is used as a slur to describe men, but in and of itself I don't know it to be a slur.

Faggy, however, I have only ever known to be a slur.

64. I agree that it can be used that way BUT it can also be used in another way which
is how I think Obama was using it and how I've used it to describe one of my daughters (I am a girl too - aka "Mom"). I have one "girly" girl who loves everything pink and frilly, dresses and just girl stuff in general. I have one daughter who doesn't like any of that type of thing.

When I say she is a "girly" girl I am not using it in a derogatory way at all.

I think Obama means a "foo foo" dog - the kind some women carry around in purses and dress up.

He is not using "girly" as a derogatory term to imply someone is gay.

This is one of those PC run amok times.

78. PC run amok?
I dont agree. Im sorry but there is nothing "girly" about any dog. Girly is a term used to describe gender norms among humans. If someone dresses a dog up it does not make the dog "girly" it makes the owner of the dog something - but dogs do not naturally were clothing - thats a human construct.

What the hell is a girly dog?

What the hell is a manly dog?

Those are gender narratives that apply to humans and their action IMO.

I should note as well as a gay man the number one insult growing up was to call someone girly/whimp/pussy etc - all gender norm terms used for a female.

102. In my experience, as a gay man and as a dad of two girls, it generally
means something cute that lends itself to being pretty.

My daughters would say a little dog that is pretty would be girly - especially if it has longer hair.

I think they would consider a Great Dane or a Bulldog to be other than girly.

"Girly" can be used as a slur - but that doesn't mean it's always a slur.

32. When you are in your mid fifties, as I am, girly is nice
And a whole lot better than "old haggy!"

I mean, girly is pretty cool, isn't it? It means clean and fun, and giggles and pink ribbons and good smells. And these days "girly" even means smart.

Maybe I am overly idealizing the word, on account of having a son (Whom I worship) and not a daughter - but girly has a lot going for it.

I enjoy being a girl, and I'm really starting to resent other women telling me I should feel otherwise.

My daughter is uber girlie, we used to call her Frilly Dilly because she was so girlie. It was a term of endearment, and we relished our girlieness together. We are tough when we need to be. We're girlie, but we're not wimps:)

Exhibiting a minor flaw, that many people can relate to, can be an endearing quality. Even better if your spouse can publicly chastise you.

I'm not saying that was his motivation for his comment - I doubt that it was. I do think that that will be the effect on most of of the populace, though.

Of course, comments like that are going to piss off a few people, probably a small minority.

27. I Think I know What he Means
"Girlie" suggests a sort of artificial, hyper femininity--the frills, pink this and that, overly made up thing, rather than as a negative jab at females. Think of someone like "girlie" Paris Hilton and her annoying yapping animal she totes around like an accessory. Give me a sturdy sensible dog with a definitive "woof" any time.

This is "girlie." Yech!

This is a real dog and one with a reputation of being good with kids:

It seems like half the people out there cannot wait to take offense at something.

I'm reminded of that DC politician from a few years back who ended up being forced to resign because he used the word "niggardly" around people who didn't know what it meant, and were perfectly willing-- even anxious-- to ignore the definition if it meant they could be outraged for a bit.

57. Lots of "estrogen" in the house. Bill Clinton
had Buddy, his beautiful brown lab. Very masculine choice and a sweet pet.
I hope PE Obama and family find the right pet for them.

58. "we're a house full of girls"
Edited on Wed Nov-26-08 10:28 PM by bigtree
He may well be a role model, but I'll bet most families recognized his comment as authentic and, possibly, a challenge to their own affinities, but not offensive as a slur or something. The dogs which are small enough for women to sometimes carry around are certainly 'girlie.' The big, bounding, slobbering canines do remind of many of our own familiar males and their own affinities for bounding and slobbering.

59. Anyone married that has kids recognizes the ying yang battle
that goes on with family dynamics. My mother had three boys
and her sister had three girls. It was a common discussion between my
aunt and her sister and even my uncle would chime in on the dynamics
of being overwhelmed. I was lucky we had a boy and girl.

I find his comment a non starter.

60. I usually call them "chick dogs".
I dont really like them either. Give me a Golden Retriever or Border Collie and I'd be set.

73. My daughter got me my dog for my birthday and told me it was a chick magnet
Yeah, after they finally left for college and the world she gets me a little dog
that would enable me to meet women.

My sexist daughter, the Dane, the artist, the musician.

Now, my dog owns me and we travel everywhere together and the only
magnet I found was my little dog's hair all over the house.

My daughter was plotting against me.

She got me the best friend I've had in years.

81. Thats exactly the point from a guy's perspective.
We have certain likes and dislikes that differ from a woman/girl's personal tastes. Yes it can be gender related, so what?! Its just normal teasing, and its an obvious truth that most women prefer smaller dogs.

Its the same thing as saying a convertible Mustang is a girly car, would that still offend you? If you think thats sexist your just being way too sensitive over this issue.

Because nobody thinks it exists. It's just the normal state of affairs for most people.

83. I think we'd be seeing outrage
if he'd said a certain dog was, for example, too 'ghetto.' But say 'girlie' and everyone's all quit-being-so-sensitive.
Whatever

95. wtf... Sexism is lower pay, forced genital mutilations, forced marriage
Stonings for adultery and rape... not being believed when you claim rape...
Being asked to have sex for a promotion or inappropriate comments at work. The list goes on and on...

Describing a tiny toy dog as "girly" is NOT sexism. You hurt our cause with the false outrage!
