Happy Thanksgiving, DU.
Our candidate won. For that, we can be thankful.
The Democratic process remains alive. For that, we can also be thankful.
Our new leaders are so far not driven by ideological purity, are not demagogues, are not rigid puritans clerics of a the political temple where right and wrong are black and white. We can be thankful for that also.
We can be thankful that we have disagreement. Without disagreement we are a bland society with no vision, no hope, no independence. Without our arguments we are stale, and we are lost.
The great leaders have all faced harsh criticism from all quarters, have been called weak, or foolish, or naive, or hypocritical. The political ideology behind the criticism has not mattered. They have faced these criticisms from them all, and they have come out on the other side, time and time again, having proved that wisdom lay with the leader who could anger his or her friends and could soothe his or her enemies and still maintain confidence and conviction in his or her own, wise goals that inspired so many. We can be thankful we have a leader who understands this.
We can be thankful we have each other, even as we argue with each other, for when it mattered we were able to unite behind a common goal.
And we can be thankful for those of us who did not unite, those who sought and seek only to divide, for they gave us a foil against which we could measure ourselves.
We can be thankful that we have tomorrow because in tomorrow there is hope.
We can be thankful.
Happy Thanksgiving.
