The harvest is late this year, and some are reaping sorrow. |
|
This year the floods and then late rains meant that many farmers could not reap the harvest until later than usual and thus are still in the fields either harvesting or preparing the soil for next year's crops. A reminder to all that farming is not just riding around on a tractor or petting a cow now and then. It is hard and dangerous work and success is measured by what comes on the next wind.
A couple of days ago, a 33 year old farmer in a nearby town was crushed under a combine and died. He left a young family. Last night the harvest was being brought into the granary across the highway from us. Something terrible happened and we are waiting to hear exactly what. Every rescue vehicle in our county was arrived and eventually the helicopter from the University of Iowa flew in. These rescuers and other emergency people were working over there for more than three hours.
Remember the farmers as you sit down to your Thanksgiving feast today. I know we will be remembering our friends and neighbors who have worked so hard to bring that bounty to us.

I'm sorry to hear of the accident and death of the young farmer. I hope the granary accident was not fatal. The farmers who are still independent have my deepest gratitude.
