White House suspends Bolivian trade deal, citing lack of drug cooperation

LA PAZ, Bolivia (AP) -- President George W. Bush is suspending a key trade pact with Bolivia, saying the South American country failed to cooperate with U.S. anti-drug efforts.

Iberkleid's 3,500 employees churn out one million T-shirts a month, including designer lines such as Polo, with some 70 percent going to the United States.

Under the suspension, the shirts will be tagged with an 18 percent tariff -- a hike Ametex officials say will kill their chance at competing in the cutthroat U.S. market.

2. Technically that isn't protectionism. It's a sanction.
Just like the Cuba embargo isn't protectionism.

3. In other words
If you don't let DEA and CIA mafias to continue their drug market monopolies and gangsterism, we sanction your economy.

4. Dimson slapped humongous tariffs on imported steel
in 2002, trolling for rust belt votes. Put a number of industries among our trading partners (probably most notably England) on the brink and nearly sparked a trade war, with a whole crapload of countries filing complaints with the WTO. The WTO ruled against him and he lifted them 1 1/2 years later, delaring mission accomplished. It was a move that pleased no one, left conservatives, progressives, and domestic steel pissed with him, and everyone else scratching their heads wondering WTF that was all about. Typical Bush dumbassery.

7. It might be the junkyard dog gene.
After all, they spend a lot of time hanging around the steel business.
