Worker trampled to death at Long Island Wal-Mart during Black Friday stampede
(snips -- more at link)

A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said.

The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

.......

Before police shut down the store, eager shoppers streamed past emergency crews as they worked furiously to save the store clerk's life.

"They were working on him, but you could see he was dead, said Halcyon Alexander, 29. "People were still coming through."

Those shoppers should be ashamed. They were all responsible too.

6. WTF is so damn important that you have to go plowing into Wal-mart
or any store for that matter at 5:00am? FUKIN morans! Wait a couple of weeks and you will probably save even more.

It's the morans that stormed to the store that should be held accountable.

14. I was always afraid it would come to this.
Any situation in which large groups of people gather in a contained place and are then suddenly let loose to a place they all want to go--be it out of a burning building or into a store, concert hall, you name it--poses the potential for this kind of tragedy. Someone falling under the tide of people, and being asphyxiated by idiots who don't even see them or know they're down as they plow right over them.

Obviously, we've learned nothing from the past incidents in which this has happened.

Good information on it here:

15. This type thing happens every year. We are quite sick. Now imagine when desperation sets in...
with the greedy enough to kill crowd. :scared: Today it is a cheap xbox 360. I dread to think about the lengths some would go for food, if it comes to that.

16. I was just thinking this happened last year too - at a Wal-Mart. They
really should have made plans to stop this from happening again. Just one more reason to hate WalMart.

17. It is greed pure and simple. People SHOULD know better.
Walmart can be blamed for profiting off an event that produces blind deadly product lust. But the PEOPLE crushing the skull of another are the ones covered in blood...for some cheap electronics.

Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 11:30 AM by Skidmore
as a result of the rush. Nothing Walmart or any other merchant sells is worth anyone's life. What was wrong with the people in that crowd? Better yet, what is wrong with mentality commerce that leads to the expectation that you must make megabucks on one day or else? Corporate America sets these expectations for performance and creates the environment in which such an atrocity can occur. And for what? An Elmo character doll or an LCD teevee?
