A worker died after being trampled and a woman miscarried when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island Wal-Mart Friday morning, witnesses said.

The unidentified worker, employed as an overnight stock clerk, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.

Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

Nassau County Police are still investigating and would not confirm the witness accounts. The Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. Police did say there were several injuries but weren't more specific.

4. Nice to see that people are getting into the true Christmas spirit.
And the fundie Christians were worried that the Walmart employees might not use the words "Merry Christmas" appropriately.

7. And any war has casualties. It's sad, but expected.
I wonder if he'll be awarded some sort of posthumous medal.

8. I would like for this story to get a lot of exposure. IMO, it would prompt some soul-searching
maybe tv stations get too much ad revenue from Walmart to run the story nationally.

In a way, this story might help ensure the young worker didn't die in vain. If it got people to examine their behavior and ended in Walmart being indicted for seriously irresponsible behavior.

6. That's so sad.
I don't understand getting so wound up about things that you'd need to run into a store like that. What a terrible story.

10. And NOW there'll be a rush of people to apply for the worker's job
As soon as word gets out that a worker at the store has died a line of prospective replacements will form.

15. Wonder if he'll get a good deal on a casket made in China?
I wonder what this says about the people who camp out overnight and kill for a DVD player?

When the grocery stores run out of food during the depression.. I wonder how these folks will behave?

because of how he was killed, a double-indemnity clause might even kick in, and the Walton family will be able to profit that much more from his death.

17. I saw this story earlier today and felt so ashamed. What a disgrace.
The entire world is going to read this too, and see what a greedy bunch of pathetic morons some of us are.

And I feel for the victim, and I hope Wallmart doesn't bury the story but tells us who this man was and how we can help.

I live in a town that is small enough that I know some of the checkers in my Wall Mart. They are not nameless, faceless people.
