Mystery piano, abandoned deep in the woods, baffles Cape Cod police
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
Monday, November 24th 2008, 8:48 AM

A police officer checks an abandoned piano for clues.

HARWICH, Mass. - Harwich police have a musical mystery on their hands: Who left a piano in the middle of the woods? And why?

The Baldwin piano discovered in the Bells Neck woods appears to be in perfect working condition and had a matching bench as if it had recently been played.
The piano was discovered Saturday by a woman walking along a path inside a conservation area at the woods.

Another question police would like to answer is how the piano got to such a remote location. The piano is heavy and it took more than a half dozen men to load it onto a truck to remove it.

Police said they've notified other police departments in the area to see if anyone has reported a missing piano.

12. there would have to be tire tracks or something...
I had an upright piano growing up. It went with me twice, until I sold it.

it requires at least 3 or 4 strong men at minimum. They are HEAVY!!
Depending on the age and the size/quality, could even be 500 lbs, sometimes less, sometimes more.

There would have to be tire tracks and foot prints.
Especially tire tracks when the piano is on the truck.

14. Sometimes people can't afford to feed their pianos anymore, so they let them loose in the wild
Unfortunately, pianos aren't used to fending for themselves outdoors, so they rarely survive for long.

It's tragic, really.

35. They published the most noise-free vinyl I ever found.
Extraordinary recordings and production quality. I had a Dual single-play turntable - top of the line and top of the line Shure cartridge - and was obsessive about cleaning and care of my LPs. Those early Windham Hill albums were a real joy ... the fidelity and range were phenomenal.

I wouldn't try to shoot and eat one, though.

28. I've had to do that
Seriously. If you've ever been stuck with a used piano during a move to a smaller place, you'll find out how hard it is to get rid of one of those things!

I ended up disassembling ours in a somewhat inelegant fashion. I put pieces of it on the curb for the garbageman over the course of a few weeks. I left the harp for last, and somebody ended up taking it home.

what the hell is wrong with the human race that we have to drown out every bit of quiet?

i would rather hear a bird, even if it's salty old dog of a swearing crow, any day of the week, than somebody playing the piano in the woods

and don't get me started on the bagpipes!

54. LOL! That's how we hear 'em...across the lake.
We live on a lake in Connecticut. Directly across from us, about a mile or so away, is some dude who plays the bagpipes. It's actually very cool to sit on the dock on summer evening and hear the sound of the bagpipes drift across the water.

But I do agree with you...across the water, even a mile away, is close enough for me.

Those folks like to take pianos out to the woods and play them:shrug:

I really find it hard to believe that it took six men to load that puppy, that's a rather small spinet piano, my friend and I loaded his family's spinet when he moved, just the two of us.
