25. Oh, sweet 1920's Gangster Jesus...
The grocery store where I work plays nothing but Christmas music for about three months straight. And not even good Christmas music - it's all unknown people singing well-known songs, only about 1/5th as well, or unknown people singing unknown songs with no talent...

30. Christmas music---obvious #1 choice.
I'm very surprised it's not in the poll.

I could get through Christmas season without any grief if it wasn't for the dreadful, annoying, repetitive, cloying, Holiday music.

41. I agree,
and unfortunately my dear husband loves it and even had it on the day before Thanksgiving. Thank goodness he's got his own little office where he can listen to it all day long to his heart's content and I don't have to deal with it. I really despise Christmas music.

22. You remind me of another annoyance
Too many direct rip-offs of the "A Christmas Carol" plot. Why can't they make a rip off of some other Christmas seasonal classics, instead? You know, like "Diehard"--that was a great Christmas movie and the only "Jacob Marley" moment was when Bruce Willis wrapped the giant link of chains around that German terrorist's neck.

must enjoy the holidays, no matter what our life circumstances are.

I'm out of step the rest of the year. The enforced gaiety of the holiday season just rubs my nose in how out of step I really am.

No, Blondie, this wasn't directed specifically at you. It was directed toward the larger culture.

Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 01:25 PM by norepubsin08
because it is the total accumulation of energy that is used. Just think if all of these Christmas' since electricity was discovered, we didn't have all these extra lights on, we'd have a lot more energy in reserve than we do now. EVERY little bit of conservation helps!!!! I hate fucking Christmas!!! I have tons of freinds and a great time the rest of the year...I hate the phoniness of the season, also I work in the Church and this is absolutely nuts time for me. Last year I sang 78 times in 19 days and was at or presided at 41 services in 23 days. By the time Christmas day noon rolls around I don't want to anyone or anything...I just want to sleep.

8. jeebuz, get some fucking anti-depressants
this is ridiculous to have to be miserable during a time of year when most people are enjoying each other. If you're miserable at Christmas - it's a problem with YOU, not the holiday.

57. That isn't exactly the Christmas Spirit.
Christmas is a time of car accidents when many lose loved ones. The weather can also trigger deaths around this time. Sometimes, Christmas is an especially lonely time, or simply has very, very painful memories. Christmas makes some people acutely aware that they don't have family, loved ones, money, etc.

I try to be very, very respectful of people who have d*mned good reasons for getting depressed around Xmas.

As for the charity events, if they were organized at other times of the year, people would probably participate. We are not necessarily heartless people, just somewhat thoughtless and in need of reminders.

and so they need to get help with those problems, not wallow in them and dump them all over everybody else. Too tough? Sometimes that's what it takes to get people to see themselves.

87. Thank you for understanding....
that there really are some people who have good reasons for being depressed around the holidays.

Like I said somewhere else, it's the Christmas music I hate.

And I especially cannot listen to one particular song which is like 50 years old but they always manage to play it anyway

Connie Francis singing "Baby's First Christmas"

My last child was supposed to have been born on Christmas, 1974.

She was six weeks premature.

We had one Christmas with her. She died two months later.

I absolutely cannot bear to hear that song.

No pill on earth is going to take that pain away.

103. Everybody has pain, it's got nothing to do with Christmas
It's got to do with your loss. If you're blaming Christmas, then maybe a group that helps parents deal with loss would be more appropriate. Everybody has a song or a tv show that reminds them of a loved one. You can't stop life because you lost someone.

I don't see any threads demanding people be joyous about Christmas. If you don't want to celebrate -- don't. Kind of like the TV, if you don't like what's on, turn the channel. You don't have to make a cazillion endless threads about the evils of television or the evils of football or the evils of whatever harmless activity that you've decided you're superior to.

There will be at least 5 threads a day on this and have been every single year. And I didn't START a thread demanding that anybody do anything. I responded to somebody else's whining. Maybe you want to figure out where your hostility is coming from, since you have a need to call me filthy names with every post.

And I have pledged eternal hostility to all petty tyrants who use "holiday cheer" as an excuse to kick people when they're down. There's at least one in every depressed person's family, and swarms of them on the internet.

Oh sure, you'll claim it's for their own good, so that they get help, but that's just a bullshit excuse to act like a douchebag.

Maybe - just maybe - YOU are the one who should seek help.

82. Most people are not enjoying each other
This isn't the "Hallmark" classic movie hour.

People don't live in Brady Bunch families...or Wally and Beaver...or Ozzie and Harriet

It's not all a nice little Norman Rockwell/Thomas Kinkaid feel-good painting

Sometimes people have issues that go way beyond anything that can be helped by popping a fucking pill or two and waiting for the nice little bluebirdies and rainbows to start.

People who are hurting on Christmas, why can't they be allowed to feel what they feel without being SHAMED into feeling guilty on top of it?

I mean, what's it to YOU how someone else feels?

Worried that Joe Blow down the street who hates Christmas is going to "infect" you with his "disease"?

People who enjoy Christmas...god bless you...enjoy it. I envy you all.

Just have fun and stop trying to make people who don't like it feel like we're going to poison you with our sadness.

There are some great Christmas songs, but most of them are either blah or they're cloying retreads of earlier hits. For God's sake, radio programmers, you don't have to play only Christmas songs for the two weeks before and after the 25th. It won't spoil my holidays if you play normal music and just slip a few not-shitty Christmas songs into the rotation.

20. Hmm....I can't find anything much annoying....
except, maybe, by people who look for things to be annoyed about.

Let's see:

1. I don't go shopping the day after Thanksgiving, but I don't mind if others do.
2. I really like all my relatives. Some of them are in their 80s. Who knows when I'll see them next.
3. I watch little television, but selling stuff is how people have jobs.
4. I don't usually watch Christmas specials, so they can't annoy me.
5. I never listen to anything Bush says, so that doesn't bother me.
6. I spend what I can afford, and no more. I shop carefully to find things recipients will like. Sometimes I even make gifts.
7. Too much food? I eat until I'm not hungry, then stop.
8. I'm glad when people help, anytime. I won't fault them for helping during the holidays.
9. I like Christmas lights. Mine are LED lights. Not much use of electricity, and they last for years.

Other

Christmas give me an opportunity to visit with distant friends and relatives. That's a good thing. It also reminds me to correspond with folks I don't see, or see only rarely. It makes me happy. Happy is good.

I'll mention it to my friend who has worked at a Salvation Army store for years, one of their best employees. And he got the job after after telling them he'd been fired for being gay.

50. Hmmm. I'd be interested to hear what your friend has to say
As you may know, the Salvation Army discriminates against gays and it does so (or at least tries to do so) with public money. In 2001, the Washington Post discovered that the Salvation Army and George Bush had a backroom deal: If the Salvation Army backed Bush's faith-based initiative, Bush would push for regulations that would allow the Salvation Army to discriminate against gays when filling taxpayer-funded jobs and providing domestic-partner benefits. See http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/w...A37723-2001Jul9

(Btw, the Salvation Army also discriminates against non-Christians. In 2005, the Salvation Army won a court case that allowed it to fire non-Christian employees, even though those positions were funded by the public. See http://www.religionandsocialpolicy....splay.cfm?id=38)

Has decreased my enjoyment of Christmas and the season of giving and family and friends and and song and decorations for pleasure.

My perspective is as a member of a predominantly Christian culture where I have never been a "Believer"

29. The church and state controversies...
I can understand why people of all religious (and non-religious) stripes make an issue out of church and state issues, and I'm fine with that. What I hate about the "christmas version" of it is listening to one group of people complain that because some town they've never heard of can't put up their christmas tree, christmas is ruined and there's a all out war on christmas. At the same time, there's another group out there yelling that it's not right that they have to be exposed to all this christmas stuff and that their 1st amendment rights are being violated, as if a bunch of trees with lights on them and a few people's "merry christmas" greetings are going to turn them into a Christian against their will.

38. Bullshit
I happen to work for a mainline church denomination and have planned and executed many a very elaborate Christmas service...however my position is: if one penny is spent in my name on Christmas then it is against my will and my constitutional rights. I shouldn't have to be exposed to a certain religious belief and I CERTAINLY shouldn't have to pay for it and by having a "town" Christmas Tree that was paid by the city to city workers to put the tree up and take it down and pay for the electrical usage of the lights on that tree then it violates my constitutional rights. On the other hand...you should see my house...it has Christmas all over it!

I don't think a town should pay for christmas stuff, but then, that has very little to do with my issue.

I'm not taking issue with the fact that christians and non-christians have legitimate issues with the things that go on, I'm taking issue with the "christmas is ruined" vs. "making me christian against my will" mentality that seems to come out.

42. Demands for "Christmas spirit"
First off, I'm Anglican. We celebrate Advent (which is on Sunday) and almost ignore Christmas, so all the people demanding "Christmas hymns" need to go look at their religious calendar again.

I see no need to populate my yard with Christmas crap. I put up a string of lights around the roof line but that's more for illumination than anything else.

When Christmas activities at the office start biting into productivity, it's time to take a step back.

54. The DU "holiday shitter brigade" that tries to guilt people out of celebrating any holidays at all
by telling you (in lengthy and excruciating detail) about the evil, oppressive-to-a-marginalized-group, greedy and exploitative origins/aspects of each and every holiday, but really swings into gear when it comes to Christmas, and also goes into lengthy detail (as if you hadn't heard any of this before) about how Christmas is just a Christian co-oping of ancient pagan rituals ("Surprise--we have scientific proof that the mythical fairytale Jesus wasn't born on December 25!") and therefore no one should celebrate it at all, period, end of sentence, because if you do, that automatically makes YOU evil, oppressive, greedy and exploitative.

Oh, and they'll cite every piece of bad news that comes down the pike that's even remotely connected to Christmas as a reason why it's so virtuous of them to personally not celebrate Christmas. You know--every time someone kills someone else fighting over a toy in a store, or some father murders his whole family and himself on Christmas, they'll use it as an occasion to say "See! That's WHY I DON'T CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS!!"

To me, that's the most annoying thing about Christmas.

58. it is all great
I can't think of even one down side - although I do hate to see parents struggling financially. That could be solved by raising people's wages, not by abolishing the holidays.

There are bigger challenges during the holidays, because it involves dealing with people. But while the challenges can be great, so can the rewards.

Junky muzak in workplaces and stores - that is annoying all year to me.

Trashy merchandise - that is true all year 'round.

Commercial hustles and rip offs - when are those not happening?

Go spend time in the eldercare facilities, soup kitchens and hospitals. Many lonely people there for whom the season means something - family and friends who they cannot be with or have been lost.

So many wonderful concerts this time of year. Get out and hear Handel, or one of the Bach Passions, or the Nutcracker.

64. A gift is about expressing love
Just because someone has a lot of things, it doesn't mean they don't appreciate a thoughtful gift or shouldn't get any gifts ever again. Maybe the reason some people are so miserable over the holidays is because they're the ones who put too much emphasis on gifts, while pretending that it's "the rich people" who do it.

76. For me, it is a combination of several of those things.
We make most of our Christmas giving surrounding food. We bake enough cookies, breads, fudges, and other goodies to give to all the neighbors and family. We even take enough to the firehouse down the street so all three shifts get some. It probably costs just as much as giving presents, but there is a lot of love put into each one.

I simply cannot go to the malls and superstores this time of year. I get too angry at the way I see people treat each other all in the name of their Holy Day. The arguing, being inconsiderate to others, all really get me down.

Most of our shopping is online, and then it tends just to be small things, more symbolic than flashy and expensive.

Anyone else find the circus surrounding the 'Holidays' to be depressing to one's spirit?

traffic around malls and other shopping areas. However, I can easily avoid these annoyances by not driving in certain areas of town, avoiding television, shopping online, etc.

When I avoid these things I rather enjoy the holiday season. There is a certain general good feeling I have this time of year that has nothing to do with religion, gifting, eating, visiting, or whatever. I especially like the feel of Christmas day when so much is closed, roads are relatively quiet, and I am sitting in the soft glow of the tree with my two children nearby. And a little snow falling outside doesn't hurt.

on edit: this is suppose to be a reply to OP.

88. How I almost miss it.
Religious or non-religious as I am at this time of the year, I often forget why I celebrate it. It's a reminder of who I all too often forget to be. Selfless. Seeing the world through the eyes of others, putting them before myself.

Introspective. Looking inward to see my faults before rashly judging those of others. To be better than those human instincts of violence and anger that we all inherit. Sacrifice. It's a celebration of how we should be.

In 50 years, it has often passed forgotten, what Christmas is. A call to outstreched arms, and outstretched hearts. A gentle nudge in the direction our paths should always be walked.

The lights. Oh let's not forget the lights.

After all this time, I'm still 9 when I see a house lit up. Especially when the lights are smiles. ;)

I love the decorating and dress my own yard up for the daytime as well as night. People are nicer, IMHO.

This year especially I'm enjoying it as my life is about to change drastically and my spouse may not be here for Christmas. We aren't giving gifts (since we are making a major league move) and it's just as good, if not better, than it ever has been.

I'm a sucker for the lights too--and I don't apologize (plus I love holiday music, I just bought a Mahalia Jackson Christmas album--whoah!)
