what was your first car?
all this talk about foreign cars and domestic cars has me curious.

My first car was this clunky old (1958) Mercedes. That was in 1970. My dad wanted me driving something safe and uncool. I hated it then. Wish I had it now.

Followed by a similar Dart sedan, followed by a TR4-A that burnt up, thanks to a Lucas wiring harness, Followed by a Dodge Van.

Someone once shot a running Slant 6 with a 44 magnum. It kept running. Best American engine ever made. You could, if pressed, rebuild one in a short afternoon.

3. '57 VW for $400 bucks
Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 03:59 PM by SpiralHawk
Had a canvas sunroof, and no gas gauge. When you ran out, you flipped a lever and got another gallon. Theoretically, that would get you to a gas station.

Followed that with a 1951 Super Chief Pontiac, with a flathead six engine. That thing was a luxury cruiser, with three on the tree and a body like a tank. One time a guy in a Corvair rear-ended me. He totalled his shitbox, while my Super Chief sustained only a minor crack to the tail light reflector. Best buggy I ever owned.

176. I HATED YOU!!
I was 14 in '67 and I lusted for that car! I mean factory posters on my wall kind of lust. I wanted it more than sex but I knew if I had one, sex was soon to follow.

I got used to it though. While I was driving farm trucks to town my friends were driving GTOs, '57 Chevys, '69 Impalas, Z28s, etc. Then I turned hippy as soon as I went to college and bought my first car. A used VW Super Beetle!

215. Looking back...
There is no way I should have been driving that car. In fact, NO 16 year old should. Gawd, I'm lucky to be alive. I remember coming back from the beach one time after a rain, drunk, with five people in the car. I was 18. I was going about 110 and hit a puddle. We did 360's for about a quarter of a mile, right down the middle of the freeway. No one said a word.

I put a dollar of gas in it and never got to drive it out. It was a real piece. After I got tired of working on it I finally traded it for a 47 ford sedan with a flathead V8 that would never quit. It would go faster in second gear than it would in high.

42. Looking at that picture I see a hole in the grill about where the front of the crankshaft is
would that be a hole for a hand crank to fit in for when the battery or starter failed you could still get it going.

I owned a GT6 plus for a couple days back in the day but I had to sell it cause I couldn't fit my 6'1" frame in it comfortably.

I figured it was worth about $50, the insurance paid me $900.

And, if it was behaving as usual, the poor sod had to push it.

But, when it ran, it was a helluva lot of fun to drive.

47. My tr dropped a rod in Dos Palos, CA.
Which was a good thing because my friends reported that I got so into driving it, that I'd stop talking for miles. I don't think I had that kind of insurance. Most of my cars cost well under what insurance cost any way.

Later there was a short entanglement with a Spitfire, not the same. It obligingly blew up on my ex during the time when he neglected to pay child support. He wasn't hurt but the incident proved Karma works.

10. 1968 Chevy Malibu...
Not my car, but a photo of a '68 Chevy Malibu for those who are wondering:

Mine was yellow, but also had the black vinyl roof. Automatic transmission but manual steering. Solid as a ROCK. LOVED it.

That car was followed by a 1970 Chevy Malibu.

Some day, when the time is right (as well as my finances) I will own another classic GM car.

Thanks for posting this thread and bringing back a very sweet memory in my life.

12. 1969 Cougar.
Followed by a '72 Pinto. Followed by a Datsun F10 and a '70 3/4 ton chevy pickup. Then another '69 Cougar. A '74 Honda Civic. An 80s vintage Hyundai, a 1990 Dodge Shadow, a '94 Toyota Truck, and an '04 Toyota tacoma.

In that mix were various other trucks driven by 2 ex husbands, and an ancient buick, salvaged and driven for a month while the Datsun was being repaired. And an 80s version Nissan pickup belonging to a family member, driven while another car was out of commission.

I learned to drive in the Cougar, and bought it from my mom when she moved on to the Honda. Which I also bought from her when she was done with it.

The engine died in 1982. Like I said, it was a POS.

My first actual car was a 1971 Ford Maverick...not built like a tank, but a person could do almost all the maintenance on it with a flat blade screw driver and a vise-grip pliers. I had a screw driver that was just perfect for gapping the spark plugs.

41. 1984 Ford Escort
which unfortunately lived up to the stereotype of "fix or repair daily." Then I had a 1984 Ford EXP. It was equally bad.

Then I had a 1992 Toyota Tercel. It was the best car I ever had. My SO's cousin is currently using it to drive to work and back.

My last car was a 2000 Hyundai Elantra. It was ok, but it was reposessed after I had it for about a year.

No car now.

I know it's blasphemy, but I miss my Tercel.

46. 1965 Chrysler New Yorker
Old school Detroit iron. Actually a very safe car, since it would plow through anything short of an eighteen wheeler. Horrible on snow and ice though, rear wheel drive.

Also had the use of a 1970 Chrysler Newport, why, I don't know. 454 Hemi under the hood, I had a blast in that monster.

225. The one my husband had was the last car his father bought.
So my husband was very attached to the little thing. It was a comfortable car for a small car and as you say, very fuel efficient. We could drive the entire round trip to visit my parents on one tank of gas! If they had ever made American small cars as comfortable and as well built as that Simca, people would have liked small cars better. Even though we are both large people (and always have been) that car had enough room that we did not feel cramped. Nowdays, even the medium sized American sedans feel more cramped then the Simca ever did.

And you are right - almost no one has ever heard of Simcas - they were a very obscure import that did not make much dent in the market.

251. I hadn't thought of it before, but it sure was spacier. My 2000 Focus is
actually more cramped. I am a larger person also and leg room sucks nowadays in the smaller cars. I do miss feeling safer with Detroit steel around me, but for the environment it is worth it.

If only my 1966 Pontiac Ventura had gotten better mpg's! Drove it from 1993 and sold it in 1996 after partial restoration.

It was easy to do though. That's the one I got my license in, in 1966... back when the Dept. of Motor Vehicles didn't make people crazy just getting a license. It was: show up whenver you think you're ready, take the written test, drive around the block, and you're done - no classes, no cost, no waiting period, no restrictions, no grief. I still think we're better drivers than those learning these days.

The first car I owned though was a red '72 Toyota Corolla stick, but at that time it was a sportyish hatchback. But I only got a Toyota because I worked for one of their dealerships (in the office) and bought it new there. That was a great little car, I have to say. I beat out a Vette going up a mountain in the Rockies once. Shocked me, and the Vette driver. That little Corolla could FLY - easily did 120 (speed limits were 80 before the '70s gas crisis). I think people drive worse at lower speeds, and nobody today realizes that our Interstates were built to be that fast and used to be.

52. 1975 Mercury Comet.
Metallic sky blue, four doors, straight six motor, and clear plastic seat covers. Total piece of shit. It was owned by the old guy who lived next door. He used to "fix" it by opening the hood and going at it with a hammer. The alignment was completely out of whack and it would go through tires in a couple of months.

I did get it up to 95 mph without a serious accident.

I could fill up with a couple of dollars. Service station guys hated us and didn't mind telling you that they weren't making money on you. In two years, after I made the last payment, it self destructed. Oh yeah, I found out it was next to impossible to get parts or someone who would work on it. The car dealer I bought it from had magically disappeared. Of course back then you rarely saw a foreign car like a VW on the street. Mostly they were really expensive imports like Mercedes or Bentleys.

It was a nice car based on a Mini I think but hand built by a guy call Cox who owned the company then sold it after about a year. GTM's are or certainly were still being built until fairly recently. I doubt if any came over to the States. I'll try to put up a picture of it.

75. A Bright Yellow AMC Pacer, circa 1977 or so...
Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 05:06 PM by Mike 03
The first love of my life, a hand-me-down from my Dad when I went to college five years later. That glorious vehicle and I managed to make it through film school together, where it appeared in a number of my student films.

When the inner door handle broke off, I kept it and still have it to this day, along with the keys.

I told my father years ago, "If I ever get rich, I'm going to buy another bright yellow AMC pacer." I still would like to do that, but I never did. I also am in search of a 1977 Black Trans Am.

I'm aware that the Pacer was an object of ridicule, but to me that was the coolest car in the world, and it got me through some very lonely, hot summers in Hollywood in the 1980s.

Ah, the innocent days of youth...

2-door of course, it was a coupe but it had the convertable's leather interior, hence the name. For the enthusiast, it was a 265, single 4-barrel, hydraulic cam. The only thing interesting about the engine was that it was an early 265 and it did not have an oil filter of any kind.

For whatever its worth my second car was also a '55 Chevy, but the second time around I had a 2-door 210 Sedan, 235/6 when I bought it (with a bad rod knock) and within days a 301.

It was back in 1970.

I kept a spare battery in the rear seat and was a pro at popping the clutch with a friendly push to get it started as well. Once it got going, it was a safer ride than the subway (LL line) to classes in graduate school.

I guess you can't brag about learning to drive stick on this thread. Ah even poured in mah own transmission fluid! But there's something universal about your first car, like your first kiss or your first fuck, mainly finding yourself comparing every subsequent model to it (i.e., "Wish I had it now"), the way she could go 70 in reverse without brushing the undercarriage.

125. Got it during my sophomore year in college
Edited on Fri Nov-28-08 07:02 PM by norepubsin08
a HUGE 1967 VIP Plymouth Fury it burned as much oil as it did gas. Every 40-60 miles or so I had to put another quart of oil in it. A 300 mile trip home from college and back would be about 15 quarts of oil. City miles would get me more. Finally the brakes went on the old beast and got ride of it for a 1963 Rambler Classic. Loved that car...I used it while in law school, brought our first child home in it 3 days after Christmas. It got to the point that it had no reverse (always had to think AHEAD) no wipers and when it rained I pulled a string for the wipers. Finally got rid of it for a real car. Funny thing is that I was going through my old neighborhood about two years ago and saw the car (we keep the same plates on the car with each sale here) and sure enough there it was. I bought it for a case of beer and a bicycle.

Great little car...til I was rear ended on the highway by someone who didn't even try to apply their breaks. I had stopped because of a traffic jam, the guy behind me didn't. Pushed my car into the car in front of me, turning my little Metro into an accordian. The driver seat was thrown back and forth, broken. It was a miracle I didn't get a broken back during the impact.

Of course, I got it in 1978. I "bought" it from my aunt for a bottle of Kahlua (very rare back then).

The car is now part of the fill in my dad's driveway.

Bought it with the first job I had out of high school, which was working for the county, typing the jury roll for the next year, 13 other girls & me. Gas was 19 cents a gallon & my first class 20 miles away was at 8:00 am downhill all the way. I don't think I ever left more than 10 minutes till and still got there before my professor.

Very much like this, but electric blue:

Learned to drive in it, lost my virginity in it, got engaged in it, puked all through my 1st pregnancy in it - all the early highlights!

2nd car was a '30 Model A similar to this one - same electric blue, w/tricked out wide wheel mags. Cops were drawn to it like a magnet. Something about a 18 yr old blonde w/the steering column tucked neatly between the knees & a rumble seat was just too tempting to pass by?

Ended up swapping the Model A for another '56 Ford pickup - that truck was invincible! One of these days I'm gonna get another ... one of these days.

I kept a pair of channel locks just in case and a couple of times drove home pulling on the accelerator cable with my right hand, steering with the left and hoping not to hit too many stop lights. Loved them little cars.

200. That reminds me...
... of the poor heating systems. It was on all the time, just a little warm in summer, but inadequate in a northern New England winter. I had to stick my head out the window to drive (with glasses on!) in an ice storm once.

My favorite VW story: I was 19 when I bought that car. I knew NOTHING about cars. It was getting to be fall, and my roommate was freaked out about the dropping temperatures. One day I came home, and he was winterizing his old Volvo, running around in a panic! He looked at me and said, 'You better get some anti-freeze in there or you'll blow up the engine!' Of course, I freaked out, too, even though I had NO idea what anti-freeze was and started finding friends who knew about these things. His panic rubbed off on me.

Naturally, I ran into someone who calmly said, 'You don't need anti-freeze. You have a Volkswagen.' I still didn't know exactly what that meant, until he explained it to me. Over and over and over. Until I got it. lol What a stupid roommie I had!

But no one told me I had to put OIL in the damn thing! I drove across country, needed a tune up in Oregon, because one day it just refused to start (gee, I don't know why! nobody had told me about maintenance, either!), and drove back home after playing tourist for a few weeks. It blew up about an hour from home in a downpour in the dark. We hitched back home. It was joyous (not), but I later found out that blowing them up accidentally is quite common. lol Oh God, I could write a book about my adventures in that thing......

229. The "non" heaters in Bugs... Oh yea I hear ya
I brought my last Bug with me when I moved to Colorado from Oklahoma. I learned very quickly that on cold mornings there was no way to clear the ice from the windshield until about half the way to work. My solution was a long handled ice scraper which I'd use to scrape BOTH sides of the windshield while driving in rush hour traffic until that anemic little heater would start melting the ice. It took me one winter to get rid of the Bug. I got tired of getting to work in a still freezing car!!

With all of their quirks I still have a soft spot in my heart for the little VWs.

185. 1986 Toyota Tercel...bought it off my great-aunt in 1998 for $400.
She had bought it new, but had driven it as her main car for those 12 years, so by the time it got to me it was a junker. Burned more oil than gas, windows whistled like a songbird at speeds above 60 (weather stripping was shot), and just generally looked like hell. Gas gauge was broken, so I learned early on to rely on the trip counter instead. Loved it all the same, though...my now-hubs and I lost our virginities together in that car. Had it for about a year, until my mom grew too scared of its unreliability to let me keep driving it.

Then a new Camry wagon, which is now 18 years old and going strong.

Cars are a very high-ticket item for nearly everyone; next to the house, a car the most expensive purchase most people will make. I cannot afford to waste my money on merchandise that wastes gas and is a monument to planned obsolescence.

I feel great sorrow for the workingmen and women of the auto industry in America, but I have nothing but contempt for their corporate masters who ran the industry into the ground.

Seeing as how WE are about the BUY the auto industry with our taxes, my fantasy is that we should nationalize it.

VW bug. It was bright orange (at one time) with a white rag top and interior. When we came back from Germany (I was born abroad/live in Weisbaden when I was a little girl) my dad got it used for my mom. Sat in the garage for a few years (quite a few) and they SOLD it to me for $500 in 1989. I drove that car for another six years.

My second car? A Geo Prism. Brand new. Graduation "Gift" that I had to match my parents on the downpayment for. Then a Cougar. And now an Altima (hybrid).

I bought it as a "beater" in 1981 after I landed my first "real" job.

It really was a lot of fun to drive. I souped it up with a less restrictive exhaust system, 2-barrel Weber carb, improved suspension, and bigger wheels (from a 1974 wrecked Honda civic station wagon that I bought as a source of parts for my '73).

Edited on Sun Nov-30-08 01:00 PM by Desertrose
...back in the days when cars didn't cost more than my first house. Didn't really get my first car til I was married for awhile.

on edit- There was a 68 VW bug whose odometer flipped from 49k to 60k on the way home from purchase!! LOL....and a bright yellow Datsun truck that my husband had.

After the sweet little Duster (oh dear, that baby could MOVE!), got a'79 Plymouth Horizon (new-cash) was in an accident& it was totaled so we got a used '80 Dodge Omni...loved those two cause I got 40mpg- back in the 70's!!!

After that a Plymouth K-car station wagon (kids by then)....hmmmm...then a Dodge minivan (new- leased & paid forever- divorce time). I loved that darn minivan but after we hit a 10 point buck at about 70mph, it never was the same.

Got a 95 Toyota 4Runner (used with like a zillion miles on it)...had for a short time ( gashog!) and then a pos '00 Chevy Malibu that died after about a year of limited driving.(Hated it from day one and the mileage sucked too).

Currently have a sweet little '01 Suzuki Grand Vitara (used) which I am really enjoying. Hope to keep it for a looooong time!

Geez...this was a trip down memory lane. LOL.

223. A total POS 1985 Honda Prelude....
That car was the worst ever had in our family! And I asked for it partly due to Honda's good reputation for reliability... Yeah, in the space of 2.5 years, that POS went through 2 alternators, 3 batteries, A/C repair, a muffler/exhaust system, and several other minor repairs until my dad finally cried quit when the catalyctic (sp?) converter needed to be replaced. Since then, I refuse to even entertain the idea of buying another Honda.

I replaced that car with a new 1992 Ford Escort GT. I LOVED that Escort!! Went for 9 years with virtually no repairs (besides body work from a side collision and a new battery at the 5-6 yr. mark). And my current car, a 1996 Ford Taurus wagon, had been quite reliable, comfortable, and perfect for our family's needs...

235. '72 Opel made by GM, Buick if I remember correctly
A friend of mine sold it to me--she couldn't drive the stick shift. I learned to drive it in the hills of Highlands NJ. No room for screwing up there! I stalled that baby out more than once. This car had serious electrical problems. You'd be driving along and suddenly all the lights would go out. I learned how to tighten the wires and get it back on. It also had serious body rust--I learned the fine art of bondo application.

The car after that was a pretty decent Hyumdai which was totaled when some jackass in a white Bronko plowed into me. I kept telling people that I was rear-ended by OJ.

That was followed by another Hyundai with fuel filter problems. That was fun. I had to make sure I had a spare filter in the glove compartment. Imagine changing a fuel filter in the middle of the Verrazano Bridge! Fortunately the cop was pretty cool about it even if the other drivers were not.

After that experience we went for quality in the form of a 95 Honda Civic--my first new car. I gave it to my daughter two years ago and finally after over 200,000 miles the rack and pinion bit the dust and she traded it in on a used Saturn.

I'm now driving a Toyota Matrix--good car--lots of cargo space and easy on the gas. We also have an '92 F250 which we use to pull the horse trailer. I've had to put tons of money into that truck but it's running pretty good now.

Cars. Can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em

245. A 1966 Mercedes Benz 250S that belonged to a psychiatrist.
Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 12:31 AM by KrazyKat
The guy barely drove it -- I bought it in 1977, and it had just a little over 50,000 miles on it. Back then, the Benz was hardly a luxury car -- the ride was bouncy and loud, and the little 6-cylinder engine was severely challenged when it came to pulling the heavy sedan chassis upgrade. Solid as a tank, though.

Drove it for 13 years, and though I miss that car, I was glad to say goodbye to the ever-escalating costs of German-car service.

I've been a loyal and happy Volvo driver since then. Never owned an American car. Headroom has always been a problem -- I'm 6'5", and most of the Japanese makes just don't have enough headroom/legroom.

Edited on Mon Dec-01-08 12:47 AM by rebel with a cause
bought by my father (with my money) out of the garage of an old neighborhood woman. It had not been driven for years and it's top speed was 35 mph. It was bought for me to learn to drive in and it had a straight shift. When I finally had mastered the gears and learned to drive, I decided to fix the car up where it was able to go faster an complete it with a floral paint job. (It was the mid sixties.) My dad threw a fit and then traded it in on a 1960 Oldsmobile (again with my money). Big car and like driving a house boat.

Being a girl did not give you many freedoms or rights in my house when I grew up. My dad was king, at least he thought he was. Was shocked when I didn't feel the same way.

Edited because I had the wrong year on my first car. Had to go find picture of one to see what year it was.
