Brit police to distribute free flip-flops
Brit police to distribute free flip-flops

TORQUAY, England, Nov. 28 (UPI) -- Officials in England's Torbay Council said police outside of area nightclubs will soon be handing out free flip-flops to women too drunk to walk in heels.

Safer Communities Torbay, a partnership involving police, Torbay Council and the Local Education Authority, said the free flip-flops are part of a $60,000 program aimed at preventing "alcohol-related harm," The Daily Mail reported Friday.

Officials said the rubber flip-flops, which bear printed messages about safe drinking, will be given out to women outside of nightclubs to prevent them from injuring themselves by either falling down as a result of their high heels or hurting their feet by walking barefoot.

"Sometimes people get drunk and you see them carrying footwear which is inappropriate," said Adrian Leisk of Safer Communities Torbay. "The emphasis is on providing replacement footwear for people to get home in, should they find their footwear uncomfortable, inappropriate or soiled."

"We have consulted with people who work on our night-time economy areas and this is just one of a number of measures designed to keep people safe," he said.

Officials said the $60,000 program also includes distribution of free condoms and sexual health literature.

2. I'm not sure what the shoes have to do with being drunk
I've been known to be seen carrying shoes after a party while stone cold sober. High heels are just painful things to wear after awhile.

Regards

8. I think the point is that many of these women will be walking home
taking a bus,or whatever, and there might be broken glass or something. still seems bizarre

5. This is as bad as handing out free needles or free condoms. It will only encourage drunkenness
Not that I'm against drunk women in bars, mind you.

7. You think women will run out in droves, in heels, to get drunk so they can
get a free pair of flip flops? Hmmm. Maybe not.

13. I don't *think* women will get drunk en masse for free flipflops. I KNOW they will
It's an established fact: ladies love the flip flops. Why do you think Kerry did so well in that demographic? :hide:

9. They include free condoms with the flip-flops
Flip-flops can also be used as knee-pads.

14. Specifically, they offer 10 condoms per pair of flip flops. That way...
they can keep their toes warm on those brisk London nights.

Those people are just so thoughtful

11. That's a dumb way to spend resources & time.
I guess that it's nice to try to minimize high-heeled drunk-chick injuries, but handing out "sensible shoes" to keep them from falling over is a bit much if you ask me.

"The emphasis is on providing replacement footwear for people to get home in, should they find their footwear uncomfortable, inappropriate or soiled."

"Soiled"? Does that mean that I am entitled to a new pair of sneakers every time I walk in piss in a bar's mensroom?

18. I guess you'd rather they spent it bailing out industries so that
their CEO's can continue to make outrageous salaries, keep their jets and their luxury SPA memberships all the while they are driving said companies into bankruptcy.
