A positive post about Christmas (but I wish it were not just at Christmas) |
|
Back when I managed several data centers I would throw parties at my house to raise money for the adopt a family program (through St Vincent's). We had a list of families and what they wanted - from the kids to the parent's, and we would go buy them everything we could and drop it off. Just my engineers and I adopted 11-12 families in two years' time. The last year I was there it was only about 4 families but was because the person co-ordinating it left and things were in disarray.
My daughter was in girl scouts and my wife was a troop leader (co-leader) and many of the girl's didn't have much, she made she we bought them all tea sets and such for the christmas party.
While this season may bring out the worst in some people, and cause others to lapse into a depression (as I have on many occasions) it also does something else - it brings out a side of people that I wished we saw all year long.
A desire to help, a desire to see others as happy as we are. There is a magic about Christmas to some folks, those of us who want to see a smile on the face of those less fortunate. Even if it is one day a year, it is more than none.
Would that we could bottle that kindness and extend it to our daily lives, to our political policies.
Maybe things will change in the future and that good will we extend to others during the holidays will grow into something we want everyday.
Would that each day could be Christmas where we want to give to others. Someday.
