Don't shop here, don't buy this, don't hire this kind of person etc.

WTF? I can understand some of what some of you are trying to say and or do, but most of you need to get of your high horse and get fucking real here.

50. It's a donkey? I thought it was a horse.
Honestly, I really couldn't tell, but since the adage is 'beating a dead horse' I went with 'horse'. Not to mention an uncanny resemblance (minus the swayback) to 'Epic/Blossom' (real name 'Blossom' but Tumbleweeds felt such an heroic steed deserved the more fitting title of 'Epic') from the 'Tumbleweeds' comic strip.

12. Litmus tests suck IMHO
The world is too complex to live in it perfectly (hell, my wife and I are living proof of all that).
I don't have anything against people educating others and giving good advice though.

I am always open to being educated about being a better citizen, but I also know I have to be realistic in day to day life (if I only have $20 and need to shop I will go where it is cheapest to get the most for my family, cause I would rather feel guilt then see them hungry, etc).

Practicality versus reality. They don't always mesh.

49. Sometimes, "I'm SMARTER than you" is more appropriate. It just seems
more "progressive" than "I'm better than you". Even better is the much used (and even more often implied) "I'm right and you're wrong". While it tends to end discussion of other points of view, it does leave open the possibility that the other person may (just MAY) have a worthy point of view on some other topic. :)

24. I know what you mean.
I was on Fidonet, then I got a rare login to the Internet, then the net became easy and ubiquitous and here we are. Throughout it all, there has never been a shortage of stiff-necked, vaguely angry prudes and "intellectual betters" who were willing to waste billions of electrons in constructing a voluminous, multi-volume compilation of most minute faults of others, down to their constituent quarks and gluons. Meanwhile, on the subject of the beam in their eyes...

Trust me: the best filter for such folks lies between your ears.

You know one thing I miss? Net Flirting. Used to be some great flirting that went on. Today, not so much. Flirting is fun. Kinda nifty, it was.

26. Just lately?
Lool! That's just one of the things about DU that will always be true and always has been. Just roll with it.

If you want to have some fun start a thread about how your SUV ran out of gas while you were trying to escape the forest fire that burned your 3000sf house in an undeveloped location. You got lost on the way to the gas station and search and rescue had to send helicopters and teams out to find you at taxpayer expense.

All of this was due to you wanting to get away from it all because your weight went up to 300lb, you had a heart attack, developed colon cancer, diabetes and fibromyalgia plus your health insurance was canceled. You were losing sleep from stress at your tenuous corporate job plus having to save college tuition for your four children.

You'll get lots of hugs for that one. Really!

33. Oh, the truth in that!
Back when I was running Fidonet net 2606, I went to a get-together with another net. Some legendary flamethrowers were there and I wondered if I was gonna have to bring my tonfa to fight my way out.

Nope. Just a binch of spark commanders. Rather average to wimpy folks who seemed to just lose their little minds when presented with a computer keyboard. 4 to 6 beepers on their belts and a retiring demeanor. Oh yes: a pocket protector jammed with every pen they have ever owned.

In fact, I might have been the most animated person at the party. When that happens, you know that true pathos is afoot.

37. There are also folks quick to grab the mantle of victimhood
Simply because someone voices a different opinion, a lot of posters dash for the fainting couch and the smelling salts to opine at length about how unfair/mean/sanctimonious someone is because they hold a different opinion. There certainly is a lot of high horsery, but there's a lot of persecution complex.

When someone says (for example) that Wal-Mart is an evil corporation that screws its employees and its customers, there's almost sure to be a line of folks that materializes crying about how they don't have a choice but to shop at Wal-Mart. Nobody said it was a sin to shop at Wal-Mart, but for some reason, the folks who shop at Wal-Mart impute the criticism of the corporation to themselves.

the ruling class laughs up their sleeves.

However, the folks who shop at whole foods have the same reaction if you dare to criticize the phony set-up there.

People generally seem to feel their consuming choices = their identity & existence.

41. Everyone has an opinion- that's for sure
here's how I try to deal, it's the same thing I do at work.

Someone gets an idea/opinion, makes a pronouncement and then I do what I think is best. If they are sensible and inclusive I generally try to implement the changes, if it's about their own power and control issues and trying to push authoritarianism at the expense of what's sensible, I file it away but never make it something I adhere to.

Life is not trouble free. Wherever people can gather and complain, they will. Wherever people can try to judge or control others, they will. Post election, it's people dealing with insecurities about a variety of things, personal and political.

I don't take most of it seriously.
