Who are the Lubovitch?

It breaks one's heart to see the child of the victims of the Lubevitch center in Mumbai.

I never heard the term until the last couple of years, but the Lubovitch sect has caught my attention lately.

In Postville, IA, the kosher group who are accused of bringing illegal Guatemaleans into Postville resulted in a raid of almost 400 people are Lubevitch. Now there are further charges of tax evasion and bankrupcy. This has devastated this little town.

Meanwhile, I've recently read Michael Chabon's book The Yiddish Policeman's Union in which the Lubevitch play a prominent part.

1. Jewish fundies. Very religious. They are very community oriented. If and only

if you are Jewish they go after you the way Jehovah's Witnesses go after people to get them to convert. Lots of dancing, drinking and singing and having fun on the Friday nights (the sabbath) praying too of course. Men have to wear hats. Married women wear handkerchiefs on their heads or wigs and long skirts that cover their knees and shirts that cover their elbows. Culturally, the women are very strong even tho there is a lot they cannot do like become the rabbi. The men, as in other religious Jewish sects, study and study and argue with each other about religious writings. It's a core value of Judaism and a reason you see so many well educated Jewish people. Education is huge.
