Hey, DU'ers! K&R and Click On Those Coal Ads!
I've been thinking about this for awhile.

Those "Clean Coal" ads are all over this site like ducks on a junebug.

Obviously, the Admin here has no control over them. They're direct buys made by the Coal Mob through Google.

Google only gets paid, and by extension, DU, if someone clicks on the ad. The Clean Coal jerks pay for the ads on a per-click basis.

Now, we all know there's no such thing as "clean coal," right? It's an advertising slogan, like "fat-free, real creamery butter," not a manifestation of current science. Here in West Virginia, they even shill coal as "Clean, carbon-neutral coal." Got that? "Carbon-neutral carbon." No. Really. They think people are that stooopid.

Anyways, since we all know what a gang of scurrulous liars the Friends of Coal (FoC'ers) are, there's no harm in clicking the ads. Shoot! Click on' em A LOT! Click all you can. Every click makes the Coal Mob pay a little more for their marketing filth. Make 'em pay! Click on 'em here and wherever else you see 'em.

When you click 'em here, you'll be costing the Coal Mafia money AND making a little bit for DU. How cool is that?

By the way, ever seen where that "clean" coal comes from?

That's Mountain Top Removal. Just ONE site. It used to be Kayford Mountain with ginseng and morels and deer and turkeys and squirrels and rabbits and bears and valleys and streams and people. Now it's a blasted moonscape so desolate that a buzzard flying across has to pack a lunch.

That's what the Coal Mafia wants you to think is "clean."

Let's Get Clickin'!

3. Thanks!
We can't beat those home-wrecking, house-rocking, well-poisoning bastards with the money we don't have, so let's try to beat 'em with THEIRS!

By the way, here's what the Coal Mob thinks of children and their education in Appalachia:

6. coupla points:
1) Google only records one click per session. Once you click, you can't hit "back" and keep clicking and expect to ring up their bill. HOWEVER if everyone who reads it give the ad a click, then that's not insignificant (although technically it's click-fraud).

2) DU *can* block ads from specific domains. Bring it to Skinner's attention and they may ban the ad.

I know you can't multi-click in a session, but I thought that as long as we all know we're dealing with the liars and frauds of the Fiends of Coal, it might generate a little revenue for DU whilst we're all gettin' "edjumicated" by the Coal Mafia, since the ads are informational and not product-driven. I find it interesting that more progressive/liberal sites are being targeted for these things. I think we're all supposed to tell Obama that Appalachian folks need more of our homes/lives/health destroyed.

I imagine the Coal Mob's paying top dollar, considering the sites where you see these ubiquitous ads, so I'd hesitate to interfere with Skinner's revenue stream.

If anyone needs a little come-to-jesus moment, it's Google for taking the business in the first place. After all, their corporate motto is "Don't Be Evil."

How much more evil can you get than this?

13. Don't forget what they do with those mountain tops after they're removed.
Bush made it legal -- it wasn't before -- to simply dump it into nearby rivers and stream, effectively destroying them forever, as well.

And ask the locals what it's done to their ground water.

I am a local. We've got an ongoing Mountain Removal job going on about three miles as the crow flies from where I'm typing this even now.

16. Urging people to click on Google ads is a big no no with Google
and in theory could cause them to drop DU causing DU to lose the ad revenue.

17. Why is Google doing business with the Coal Mob
when their corporate motto is "Don't Be Evil?"

Is THIS evil?

As someone who's affected by Mountain Removal, I'll tell you straight-up that it is.

Maybe Google should change their motto to "Don't Be Evil, Unless It's Making Money" or "Don't Be Evil, Unless It's To Appalachians-They're Not Really Americans"

I understand your point, and would certainly not do anything to try to harm DU.

I find the ads as offensive as you do, but I think the better course of action is to request that Skinner opt out of this particular advertiser. Skinner can't possibly keep track of every ad that pops up so we need to tell him if something particularly offensive pops up frequently.

Urging people to click on ads could be considered click fraud.

20. I didn't think you were OK with it
I'm suggesting a larger strategy of getting after Google, not here, but elsewhere.

I don't know that Skinner will listen to me, but I'll shoot him a note.

It's obvious that the Coal Mob is making a pretty large push in the liberal blogosphere.
