Modern medicine is really to blame for GM's woes
Had modern medicine not intervened, their "legacy" costs would be far less:evilgrin:..

Perhaps the reluctance of government to adopt health care for all , is a clever way to avoid future "legacy" costs:(

Back when pensions were "promised", the life expectancy was not what it currently is, so companies in the 50's & 60's felt pretty confident that the deferred pay, in the form of enhanced pensions, were "safe" bets.. A guy who retired at 65, after 40 years of hard labor, probably would not cvollect a pension for all that long.. (my grandparents both died before their 71st birthdays)..my parents died at 65 and 72..My father collected 4 social security checks..

It's crass to think like this, buy after seeing the crew we've had in charge for 8 years, I do actually sort of believe it..

Modern medicine has allowed many people to live 10-15 years longer than they would have, had they been their age "back then"...

"krauthammer: For example, the biggest preventative healthcare success in American history is the reduction in smoking. What happens instead of dying young if you smoke, you die older, spending years in a nursing home, and the costs end up higher. I'm not in favor of dying young, but it's more expensive if you live longer. If you die of a heart attack at 50, that's awful, but it's cheap. If you live into your 80's, you will end up with Alzheimer's or cancer or a chronic disease that's expensive. So, as a society, look %E2%80%94 I'm not arguing in favor of sudden death and early death, but it's not a way to save money, which is what Obama is selling, which I have heard for 30 years. The way to save money in healthcare, the most immediate and effective, is to eliminate defensive medicine. I was a chief resident 30 years ago and a lot of our tests are entirely unnecessary and are a way to prevent lawsuits. The Democrats will never do that because of their dependence on the trial lawyers."

Just think of all the excess medical costs that he's been responsible for in his own life by choosing a high risk behavior that left him paralyzed, and then not having the decency to blow his own brains out for the good of society.

2. Pretty much
If we want to solve the healthcare crisis it is easy to do. Just go back to a 1980 level of medical care where treatment was inferior to 2008 levels and not as many people who needed it were getting it. Do that and medical costs go down to reasonable levels again.
