Economy takes its toll on pets in Washtenaw County

Kathy Spain opened the door to a room full of puppies and small dogs in the county's animal shelter and offered a cheerful, "Hi, everybody."

A symphony of barking erupted.

On Christmas Day, the Dexter Township woman and 10 other volunteers spent several hours at the shelter - like they normally do - walking dogs and cuddling cats.

They're busier than ever at the shelter, operated by the Humane Society of Huron Valley in Superior Township.

Inside, some signs of the troubled economy are evident: Pets given up by people who lost their homes to foreclosure or eviction, pets given up by people who had to downsize by moving into apartments or with relatives, and pets given up by people who simply couldn't afford them anymore.

And: as bad as it is in Washtenaw, just imagine how bad it is in Wayne County. We just rescued another kitty, a wonderful lad who would have been euthanized.

I wish I had Bill Gates money....the things I could do....

And if you want to really see hard times for cats and dogs, visit Indonesia. Many stray kitties over there from all the Dutch colonialism. It would break your heart. It did mine, several times. It breaks my heart again now, just thinking of it.

I wish I could save every last one of them.
