Just a thought about Franken and Coleman |
Coleman will file a suit challenging Franken's election to the Senate and that will cause a delay in Franken being seated but in the end Franken will win. It is my understanding that a condition of filing the suit is that should Franken prevail Coleman will be liable for all legal costs, both his own and Franken's. That puts Franken in the interesting position of being able to use lawyers to bid Coleman out of his lawsuit. Let us say that 100 lawyers offer up their services to Franken for $10,000 each and Franken accepts - now Coleman is potentially on the hook for $1,000,000 in Franken's legal fees should he lose. Not enough, well then, add 100 more lawyers. Sooner or later the cost of a potential loss has to start getting to Coleman, one would think. After all, if he loses the Republican Party is going to dump him like 4-day-old shrimp.

1. The delay in seating will cost Franken seniority |
I think that is what the Senate Democrats want. They were never enthralled with having him in the Senate, but they want another Democratic vote too. So by not seating him today they can make him #99 in seniority (before Burris or whoever from IL), and stick him on the District of Columbia committee.
