Octuplets' Family Filed For Bankruptcy
CBS News has learned that the family of the octuplets born this week outside Los Angeles filed for bankruptcy and abandoned a home a little over a year-and-a-half ago.

Early Show national correspondent Hattie Kauffman says the mother is in her mid-thirties and lives with her parents.

1. Makes me sick when people have babies they can't afford
This country does NOT need more children whose financial futures are at risk!

2. oh, but she's asking for $2 mil for media interviews....
So "hopefully" they'll be well-supported.

The McCaugheys, the Gosselins, the Duggars.

People who shouldn't be breeding not only breeding but making shitloads of money for the pleasure of inflicting their "joy" on us.

4. New medias need to be real careful how they handle this show
This stuff sickens me anyway, but any news media that pays top dollar for this interview may find the backlash not to their liking.

It won't be long until we hear from the birth mother that it is not fair that other mother's of octs get national news media etc, while I don't get squat.

This throws a grenate into the whole child welfare/lack of involvement (financial and otherwise) of the birth father debate. Finally a case so outrageous has come about that even rabid supporters of unfettered welfare benefits to birth mothers no matter how many kids etc have to pause to think about it.

5. but that's what makes it so maddening...
Instead of this being an issue regarding the mental health of a mother and the medical malpractice involved in not only giving her fertility treatments, but such extensive treatments, it's going to end up coloring people's perception of women who end up with multiple children because they're uneducated and/or don't have access to proper contraceptives and not because they're hoping to score a $2 million TV show deal.

It's like women who falsely accuse men of rape or black people (or whatever minority) who do a poor job or don't show up for work but then scream racism when they're fired: the case becomes the happy poster-child of misogynists and racists (respectively), who then make it harder for women who actually are raped or minorities who actually are discriminated against to receive sympathy.

3. 40% of babies are born on Medicaid
Most people wouldn't tolerate cheap labor wages if they didn't have those kids they can't afford.

6. This whole story is disturbing.
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 10:45 AM by Avalux
I read an article in which the mother's mother - the grandmother - said she has had enough with her daughter and will not be there when she gets home from the hospital. She said her daughter is obsessed with having babies and ALL of her children have been in vitro fertilization. She cannot continue to support her daughter and take care of her grandchildren.

If this is true, the mother of these octuplets needs psychological help. She also needs help caring for all of her children. I hardly blame HER mother for being overwhelmed and refusing to help care for the children under the circumstances. Enough is enough.

So is the answer $$ for interviews and a tv show? Is that what the mother had in mind all along? Makes me sick.
