Military base and Iraq occupation opponents share Hawaii park with troop support groups

February 1, 2009

Mauna Kea, Hawaii -- Opposing viewpoints concerning the presence of the Pohakuloa Training Area were expressed only a few hundred yards from one another along Mauna Kea's Saddle Road on Saturday.

The Malu `Aina Center for Non-violent Education and Action gathered at the Mauna Kea State Park to peacefully protest the military presence on Hawaii, as well as the U.S. war in Iraq and the occupation of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The group also voiced concerns over what they say is the Depleted Uranium radiation contamination in the area. Paul Neves and his Hula Halau joined in a ceremony of healing for the aina. Jim Albertini provides more information in an interview.

At the same time, in response to the protest, a gathering of military supporters and family lined the road outside the gates of the PTA. The Hawaii chapter of Gathering of Eagles waved American flags, and cars beeped as they drove past. Wives of the Family Readiness Group brought their children to show support for troops at home and abroad.

Both groups shared a common concern for the well being of the American troops. Robert RedHawk explains more in an interview.
