Taking a break
Edited on Sun Feb-01-09 09:50 PM by MichaelHarris
not from DU but from studying Constitutional Law. I take this break to post a small rant, a rant that may not be too popular with some. I had stopped watching pro sports a number of years ago, I discovered college football and Woman's Basketball. Tonight I decided to put on the game and maybe catch a funny commercial or two, not that many Americans can buy the stuff they are selling. I kept hearing the "Kurt Warner" story, the guy who rose from stock boy to Superbowl quarterback. Who is this superhero I thought, this Cinderella boy? I did some Google.

"Both Kurt and his wife are active born-again Christians. On October 24, 2006, he was featured in a political advertisement opposing a bill supporting embryonic stem cell research in Missouri. The advertisement was in response to a pro-embryonic research ad featuring Michael J. Fox. He appeared in the advertisement with James Caviezel, Patricia Heaton, Jeff Suppan, and Mike Sweeney. The advertisement aired during Game 4 of the 2006 World Series."

How Christian is it to speak out against something that can save lives? How Christian is it to to do a commercial opposing Michael Fox and all of the human beings around the world that can use some science? How against stem cell research would the Warner's be if such a disease or injury struck close to home? Would they be born again, again?

I love supporting the underdog. Not tonight. I know he is one man, a member of a team but I cannot hope for any good will towards him. My team wants what is best for the people of the world, my team believes science can save lives. Warner and his wife are not on my team.

End rant. Now about those Lady Cougs? We won!!!!!!! One of my shots from Saturday's game:

Michael Harris

Support women in sports, they rock!

1. So i guess we can safely say that you decide if someones christian or not
What else are you final arbiter on, i guess that all of us christians should just wait until you print the checklist before we head of to chapel this week.

5. I am one of those other christians from you, i am deeply uncomfortable with stem cell
So i guess that must mean i am anti science if i believe that there must be a moral component to what science does.

28. I guess i dont trust scientists to the extent that you do.
I believe that people should be able to question science, and if they use their moral or religious views then thats fine, same as people should be able to question religion using science.

Just finger pointing, no questions of science, just allegations of something foreboding. So nothing really, you "got" nothing.

36. what do you want a thesis on distrust of unbridled science
you asked me why i dont trust scientists without there being the ability to question them, simply put when you have had scientists experiment on family members in the past you tend to not trust their motives as pure. Not sure what else i can say as im not trying to convince you, just giving a different viewpoint and hopefully a window into why others may have misgivings.

Pretty much, yeah.

"i believe that there must be a moral component to what science does."

Actually, you got it backwards.

Objection to stem cell research is deeply immoral.

Like the people who won't get their kids blood transfusions. Or people who prevent the distributions of condoms.

stem cell research in 2006. It was published right after Warner made that obnoxious commercial. It was about saving lives and the importance of doing that. Really smacked Warner and the anti research idiots down.

As far as CdA goes, crowded is relative. Here's a shot I took in November:

I don't mind that he made it. I don't mind that he made it as a "Christian."

One of the major points of any major religion is that you "surrender" to the idea that as a human, you don't get to control things. That's for the Big Guy. Deeply religious people view stem cell research and a variety of similar scientific research as a means of seeking to control the direction of humans, as a race.

Sue me, but I see a lot of things in modern day research to be horrified by. They're taking out patents. They are putting dollar values on life itself, and in the process devaluing it.

What I do mind is that he and others are so very selective about what they view as "control" and what battles they'll step into. Fertility treatment = okay, the pill = not? Eh, no. How is fertility treatment less controlling?

I feel badly for Michael J. Fox and everyone else who suffers. I've enjoyed his movies. But I don't think publicly disagreeing with him, or counter-lobbying against him, automatically makes someone an asshole.
