“He looked just as natural with a bong in his hand as he does swimming in the pool,”
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 12:31 AM by Liberal_in_LA
I know this has already been discussed to death in DU. Just liked this quote:rofl:

Sources told the British paper that Phelps was asked if he wanted to smoke marijuana. He said yes and was then led to a back room.

“He looked just as natural with a bong in his hand as he does swimming in the pool,” one witness said. “He was the gold medalist of bong hits.”

Phelps’ rep, Clifford Bloxham, was caught off guard by the photo and reportedly attempted to keep the photo from being published, with offers of cash as well as a deal to have the swimmer write a column for the paper for three years.

Phelps is on track to earn approximately $100 million from endorsements and he’s already signed deals with Speedo, Visa, Frosted Flakes cereal and the video game Guitar Hero .

outlawing a substance that millions of adults choose to use?"

30. illegal???
as if people don't see daily examples of certain things that are illegal, but if you have enough money, you can get away with them anyway.

and NOT as if there shouldn't be laws, it's just that, if law is the criteria, then there OUGHT to be Justice.

19. no, in his case it's different. he isn't competing and the drug isn't the type that would enhance
performance. in fact it would probably slow him down.

he is just having some fun. i just don't see the big deal with this.

28. If this helps end the idiotic war on drugs, he'll have at lest 60 million fans
i.e., the otherwise law abiding Americans who smoke pot recreationally, and are currently defined as "criminals".

Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 02:08 AM by cherish44
People have short memories. Remember when Kate Moss was photographed doing coke? She lost a bunch of contract right after and then a couple years later she was back to signing multimillion dollar deals. Yeah she's model not an athlete but remember she was doing COKE not taking a bong hit. I'd venture to guess that a good percentage of the American public under the age of 60 probably tried whacky tobaccy in their youth...

20. He might have done it one purpose? I mean, think about it a bit here
He knows he's a celeb.

He's got enough money to retire on already, if he wanted to.

Maybe he reads between swims, and maybe he thinks legalizing pot is a good idea and is trying to do his own sort of 'Rosa Parks moment' here. I sat down because I was tired, what difference should race make? I smoked some herb, what difference should races make?

It's just absurd that a PLANT is considered so terrible, when "Demon Rum" has been rehabilitated.
