Anyone else glad the the Steelers thanked "O" instead of god?
I sure am! Too many times these players fall to their knees with a "heartfelt" "THANK YOU JESUS!!!!". Like the Almighty gives a flyin' fuck who won their stupid little game. But thanking President O'Bama for his support is not only a patriotic thing to do. but also a logical thing to do. After all. we can see O'Bama, he isn't invisible, nor does he live in a gated community in Cumulonimbus clouds. Hell, we even elected him to his job.
Now that's what pissed the freepers off, firstly, anytime we do anything patriotic, it makes the neo-Cowards nervous. They've invested eight years tell all those who would listen, that we hate America. This makes them loose that asinine argument. Secondly, it points out how the good lord doesn't have a dog in the Super Bowl fight and could care less who gets that trailer trash lookin Super Bowl ring!
ARE YA WITH ME ON THIS DU!!!!! We didn't give up when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor did we???

1. I'm only wondering if anyone else is labors under the illusion that the majority of the players...
*didn't* praise jeebus, in some common fashion, upon winning.

I am glad it wasn't heavily televised - if it was televised at all - though.

Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 09:26 AM by Ken Burch
after winning an NBA title.

Or an Alaska Native athlete would praise "Raven" in the post game interview.

Or that some athiest jock might thank "my own conscience".

37. I'm just as glad none of those happened.
I'd rather see them thanking people who had an actual influence on their performance. It's sort of heartwarming to see them thank their coaches, teachers, spouses, parents, etc.

2. Did Jesus bet on the point spread?
It drives me mad when athletes are so full of themselves to think that an imaginary deity would give a crap about their sporting contest.

The Steelers should thank their lucky stars, though--that wasn't the rout that the pundits anticipated. It was an interesting game, actually.

3. I don't think Jesus or Obama determine the winner of the Superbowl
Edited on Mon Feb-02-09 03:47 AM by yodoobo
Thanking Obama for the win makes about as much sense as thanking Jesus for the win.

But I do imagine that Obama was probably a bit more interested in the outcome.

5. I think Rooney thanked Barack Obama, because the Prez was hoping that they would win,
and wasn't afraid to say so....like some politicians might.

Plus, it put Rush and the rest of the Freepers in their place.

Personally, I loved it.

Cause politics affect policies which affects all Americans, including Football teams and their owners.

8. no, the owner said, I want to thank President Obama for his support
and all of our fans.. blah, blah, blah. I thought it was a nice thing to do. AND no, I don't think God plays favorites in regards to the winning team.. but I do think faith has helped some of the players thru their life and with the decisions that they may have made along the way in their life.

28. Well said ....

It is hurtful to me when others decide that faith is not helpful and is something to be stepped on.

I don't ask that anyone believe in anything.

Likewise, I would hope that others would respect my right and the right of others to believe.

In this troubled world,I need all the help I can get and as long as I am not hurting someone, I have the right to believe.

Thanks

38. I think this is different
If you want to believe something, go ahead. But if you go on television and say "I want to thank god for blessing me with this victory" I now get the chance to say "So god hates the Cardinals?" Because that is essentially what is being said. Believe what you want. Once you publish it, the discussion starts.

21. It's not exactly the same. It's thanking one of the fans.
They probably should thank the fans, whose support may have had some effect. Thanking God is ridiculous because if they lost the game, were they going to blame God or consider it a sign from God that they were sinful?

26. Also, how come you never hear the LOSING team say:
"There IS no God. We now spit upon earthly superstition. We shall pledge our souls to the Prince Of Darkness".

That'd spike ratings for the post-game show, if nothing else.

brain damaged folk too! :hi:

Freepers are people who post at Free Republic, a site for war-like, "conservative" (anti-change, anti-conservation), Bush-lovers.
I've never been there but it seems to be packed with assholes living in denial.. from the quotes I've seen, anyway.

22. So in other words you're against players, coaches, etc. thanking God for their success
However you have no problem with players, owners etc. thanking the president like he was a God.

Frankly I don't care who the players thank, their family, God, Obama, whatever. It's their moment, who are we to say that they've got to celebrate in a particular manner?

29. Yogi Berra story
This from David Briggs, a religion reporter for The Plain Dealer of Cleveland:

"If all the prayers this year from New York, San Diego, Cleveland and Atlanta seem to be putting too much on God's shoulders, one might follow the advice of Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra.

"In a story told by Joe Garagiola in his book, `It's Anybody's Ballgame,' a baseball player noted for his piety always marked a cross with his bat in the dirt next to home plate.

"When he came up to bat in a game against the Yankees, Berra, also a religious man, reached over and rubbed out the cross with his catcher's mitt.

"Why don't ya just let God watch the game?" Berra said. (from in the Seattle Times, 1998)

A good baseball story but it applies to all sports.

41. Hallelujah!
My chief concern all along was that a Cards win would have given Rev.* Warner free and unfettered access to sermonize at: the postgame interviews, various news shows, Letterman, probably about three brazillion commercials, and (horrors!) the very White House we worked so hard to make free of fundie blowhards.
