Ex-Mass. GOP official Lawrence Novak pleads to money-laundering
By Associated Press

BOSTON — The former vice chairman of the
Massachusetts Republican Party has pleaded guilty
in a scheme to "cleanse" illegal drug money for a
legal client.

Lawrence Novak pleaded guilty to two counts of
money laundering Monday, just as he was about
to go on trial in federal court in Boston. He also
pleaded guilty under the Alford Doctrine to a
single count of obstruction of justice,
maintaining his innocence but conceding that
prosecutors had enough evidence to likely win
a conviction.

The 57-year-old Novak was arrested in 2005 after
investigators said he offered to launder drug
profits for one of his clients.

Novak is scheduled to be sentenced May 13.
