Where's Sen Grassley On Single-Payer?
He's a Rethug (yecch), but he's been the strongest member of Congress in trying to create less-absurd health care, and I believe he was outspoken in expanding SCHIP. If he's anywhere near being in favor of single payer, he might make a good HHS candidate.

2. But, Sadly, Dean's Very Unlikely
He's a lightning rod, and Emanuel hates that Dean did a much better job than he of winning congressional seats in 2006.

3. Uh, Emanuel and Dean were working together in 2006.
Dean was the DNC chair and Emanuel was the head of the DCCC.

5. Unfortunately Emanuel Was At Dean's Throat
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 04:34 PM by MannyGoldstein
Emanuel kept screaming that Dean needed to bag the 50-state strategy in favor of the "handpicked DINOs in in swing states" strategy. It was quite a battle.

Fortunately Dean held his ground and we did far better than we would have.

8. Nope. That isn't how it happened. The conflict was over money, not strategy
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 04:54 PM by wyldwolf
Emanuel wanted more money from the DNC to pour into close and winnable races. Dean balked.

9. Money Is How One Makes Strategy Happen
The two are fairly inseparable.

10. sure it is

In our best chance to take the house in 10 years, Dean wanted to starve close races in favor of building building parties in far-flung places - like Georgia where the Democrats lost big. Emanuel wanted extra cash from the DNC for 40 competitive House races - which he got from Dean after a heated exchange (read: Emanuel won) and the Dems won the House big.

4. funny thing about SCHIP and Grassley
Edited on Tue Feb-03-09 03:31 PM by rurallib
He voted for it when Bozo was president knowing full well it would be vetoed. With a president who favors SCHIP and would sign it. Grassley said "Nope"

"The U.S. Senate voted 66-32 yesterday to expand the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). All of the no votes were Republicans, including Iowa's own Chuck Grassley. He was ready to sign every blank check for George W. Bush, but when it comes to expanding the safety net for families lacking health insurance, he's Mr. Deficit Hawk."

A friend of mine is all over this. Mr. Chuck will do everything he can to scuttle Obama.

edit to add - Grassley is probably one of the most cynical of all Senators and in my personal experience can be extremely arrogant with those who disagree with him. Iowa would do the US a great favor by removing him. He talks one way, acts another.
