TAP: Limbaugh now in charge of bullying Republicans...large and in charge.
Interesting article from today's American Prospect. It points out how it is really a benefit for President Obama to have Rush Limbaugh become the titular head of the Republican Party. Which he is right now. There is no clear leader, and he has the loudest bully pulpit.

Limbaugh vs Obama

(AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite)

At a giddy Capitol Hill ceremony in December 1994, Rush Limbaugh was declared an honorary member of the 104th Congress, so grateful were its ascendant Republicans for the radio host's assistance in winning majorities of both houses. Limbaugh told the assembled members to remain "rock-ribbed devoted in almost a militant way to your principles." And indeed they did.
The ensuing years had their ups and downs for Limbaugh. Though his radio program continued to prosper, there was a divorce (his third), his arrest for "doctor shopping" to feed his prescription drug habit (including allegedly sending his housekeeper out to procure drugs for him -- so classy), and the development of a condition that left him almost deaf. But the biggest problem Limbaugh had was the success of the politicians he supported. With Republicans in control of all three branches of government from 2001 to 2007, Limbaugh found himself forced to defend the prevailing order, which is neither as compelling nor as fun as assaulting the powers that be.

But now with a new Democratic administration and Democratic majorities in Congress, Limbaugh is just where he wants to be -- on the outside, decrying the perfidy of the president and bullying fellow Republicans who fall out of line. And he's getting a big hand from President Barack Obama, who recently told congressional Republicans, "You can't just listen to Rush Limbaugh" if they want to accomplish anything. It might have seemed beneath the president of the United States to take a shot at a radio host. But rest assured, Obama knew just what he was doing.

McCain doesn't get it.

At least one person couldn't figure it out, though. Demonstrating again the razor-sharp political acumen that served him so well last fall, John McCain couldn't fathom what Obama might be up to. "I don't know why he would do that. Mr. Limbaugh is a voice of a significant portion of our conservative movement in America," McCain said. "I don't know why that the president would take him on. He's part of the political landscape, and he plays a role."

I agree with Paul Waldman. McCain just doesn't get it. The more people who see the true colors of Rush Limbaugh, the wider the exposure about his 38 million dollar a year contract, the wider the exposure about 5 Palm Beach homes, and 6 cars worth half a million each...the more people will start to think Aha!!. Maybe he is not what we thought he was....I think many will think that.

For example, we drove to the house from the studio, Limbaugh at the wheel, in a black Maybach 57S, which runs around $450,000 fully loaded. He had half a dozen similar rides on his estate.

“I have these cars for two reasons,” Limbaugh said. “First, they are for the use of my guests. And two, I happen to love fine automobiles.”

He also loves space. There are five homes — all of them his — on the property. The big house is 24,000 square feet. Limbaugh lives there with a cat. He’s been married three times but has no children.

The man who can make politicians like Phil Gingrey grovel before him on air..begging his forgiveness will perhaps get more attention than he likes.

But when the congressman for Georgia’s 11th district sounded off this week about Rush Limbaugh - saying it was easy for him “to stand back and throw bricks” while elected officials provide leadership - Gingrey had little inkling of the uproar his remarks would create.

Within hours of criticizing the popular right-wing talker, the GOP lawmaker’s offices were bombarded with phone calls and e-mails from outraged constituents and Limbaugh devotees known as “dittoheads.”

By the next morning, a humbled Gingrey was phoning in to Limbaugh’s show to apologize.

“I just wanted to tell you, Rush - and all our conservative giants, who help us so much to maintain our base and grow it to get back this majority - that I regret those stupid comments,” he said.

Gingrey’s grovelling mea culpa is being heralded as evidence to support two emerging views of the conservative movement in post-George W. Bush era - that there’s a Republican leadership vacuum in Washington, and that Limbaugh, the great tormentor of liberals everywhere, is stepping in once again to fill the void.

And in reality that is true.

In a party in which Joe the Plumber and Sarah Palin are strutting their strut and pretending to be the bosses....Rush will have the bully microphone.

Best thing that could happen to our intelligent and well-spoken President Obama. They look pathetic beside him, and the public will not for very long be able to rationalize the presence of the three musketeers, Rush, Sarah, and Joe.

1. Xactly!
The more foolish they look, the better off we are; so we shouldn't castigate them for all their idiocy, but just let it roll.

2. McCain once called Limbaugh a circus clown then apologized

to circus clowns for insulting them.

It's pretty funny to see that their are no Republicans left with a pair of balls between them.

When one fat unelected-drug-addict-blowhard is seen as their leader then it will soon be lights out for the GOPygs.

20. Limbaugh constantly referred to McCain as "Carol Channing" -
this was back in the early 90s, when McCain actually held a claim, at times, on the "maverick" label. Not shocking at all to see the bad blood in that relationship...

Me thinks Rush is on his way to a major cardiac event.

Do his listeners really believe he 'deserves' to be making so damn much more money than them?

Honestly, I don't understand the attraction to such an aweful human being. I try. Yet, I can't imagine the inner-workings of the crowd that follows this man. He's a lot like that Jone's fellow that led followers to suicide, in my opinion...just as power-sick and estranged.

17. Hubris...it is one hell of a drug.
There's a reason the old sayings about how "Pride goeth before a fall" and "Those whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad", and those that run along similar lines are still quoted after the gods only know how many hundred years.

It's because THEY ARE TRUE.

The pedestal the right wing putting him on just keeps getting higher and higher...and y'all know about how self-deceit, imbalance, gravity, velocity, free-fall and SPLAT...uh...I mean sudden deceleration (coupled with high impact) plays out...:nuke:

Dude's riding for a fall...and it ain't gonna be pretty when he hits the ground.

Not ill-wishing; it isn't necessary. Just going to sit back and watch the show.
Anyone want something to drink with their popcorn?

34. And yet, those three *are* the Republican Party leadership right now.
Can you believe it? A hate-radio gasbag, an airhead, and an ignorant nobody. Could any other set of three so perfectly capture the nature of today's Republican Party? Nobody's heard of Steele, or Cantor, or any of the other supposed "leaders". Just these three idiots.

The continuing decline of this awful party is just so entertaining! Over the cliff with ye, lads!

23. Never underestimate the power of that "Blow Hard."
All this attention just increases the attention to him...and empowers the RW Knuckle Draggers who've always supported him. The Racist Faction is always happy to have a leader and if enough folks get disillusioned with Obama then Rush can pick up the Lou Dobbs faction, too.

I wish he wasn't getting the attention he is. Sometimes we Dems shoot ourselves in the foot. He's better ignored. But, of course, I could be wrong. I just remember all the "Boycotts" we Dems did of him after 2000 Selection and after his Drug Bust...but like Cheney, Rush is the "UnDead." He has a faction of the politico that will never leave him and the attention he gets could make him the Leader of the Great Disenfranchised if the stimulus (now being hacked up) doesn't work and things drag out a couple more years.

I just would never underestimate him.

I have Republican relatives who are now furious when they hear him spoken of as being a party leader.

Good enough for me. They are getting angry at him and at Joe the Plumber. Some still think Sarah Palin is their savior.

26. I understood your post...but
I was just cautioning, and expressing my opinion of all the media attention to Limbaugh. I would always hope that exposing the guy for the Millions he makes and his lifestyle would work. Maybe in the hard times coming it will. I think folks think that Rush is entitled to his "privilege" and he deserves it because he supports "the little guy." The same crowd that throws their little hard earned dollars at those Evangelical Preachers who live a grand lifestyle...are the ones that love Rush. They never learn. They probably love American Idol and were former addicts of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous." There's no help for their stupidity.

28. Amazing how Republicans grovel and lick his balls
They are so afraid of him and are really deluded to think that he speaks for the people of the US. Let him have his bully pulpit. The more he spews his right wing hatred from his fat ugly piglike jowls and exceedingly large pie hole, the more ridiculous he'll seem. Let him have his position as the exaulted one of the Repig party. For each and every day they let him be the leader el supremo, it'll simply make the Republicans look more and more out of step with the American people and render them more and more irrelevant. Nature abhors a vacuum and this fat disgusting asshole and disgusting piece of shit is filling the leadership vacuum of the Republican Party very nicely.

29. I agree with you. President Obama (I really like posting that, particularly
on conservative website) is waltzing Rush right down the primrose path and Conservatives and even most of the media pundits, both left and right, don't have a clue. Fortunately, Rush has just such an enormous ego that this dance will be a cake walk for the President as El-Rushbo is taking the bait hook, line, and sinker.

33. Looks like the same thing he did during the election season
when he kept associating McCain with Bush. Linked him up with a loser...

Now he's creating the same sort of association between Rush and a certain part of the Republican party. The more "reasonable" Republicans will be trying like hell to keep from being associated with Limburger. Hopefully, that will create a split in the party and maybe even (we can only hope) end up destroying the Neocons forever.
