2. All Hail the Lord High Protector!
When you think about it, Cromwell's dictatorship was so bad, the British reinstated the monarchy.

4. They had to do something about the slump in the real estate market!
When you head into the Civil War, all those country house poems become very weirdly depopulated, as if everyone has fled or is in hiding.

5. But it was a very RESTRAINED sort of monarchy. The "Divine Right of Kings" had been ended for good!
And it was a definite step to what seems to be (from my USA vantage point), a reasonably well functioning democratic system of government.

The English Civil War has always fascinated me, particularly the "left-wing" aspects of it ("Levelers" and "Diggers").

6. The Land and Freedom pages
http://www.bilderberg.org/land/index.htm

I came across this valuable source, while doing further Googling on this topic. The word "Bilderberg" rang an alarm ("Oh Oh! "Tinfoil territory"), but it still contains valuable stuff, not easily obtainable elsewhere. Here's a pamphlet by a principal Digger, Gerard Winstanley: "The Law of Freedom in a Pamphlet": http://wwhttp://www.bilderberg.org/land/index.htmw.bilderberg.org/land/lawofree.htm
