Austrian Catholics up in arms over pope's comments
Pope Benedict XVI's decision to rehabilitate a Holocaust-denying priest and to appoint an ultra-conservative bishop in Linz has set back years of efforts to modernise the Catholic Church's image in Austria, critics say.

The moves are "a slap in the face for the Austrian Church" and the sum of signals being sent by the Vatican was "appalling", said Erhard Busek, a Roman Catholic and former politician from the conservative OeVP party who served as Austria's vice chancellor between 1991 and 1995.

Busek last month launched a "Layman's Initiative" to reverse the decline of the Catholic Church in Austria, where the number of believers has been falling dramatically for years.

"It's not a message of peace, more a declaration of war," said the prominent Roman Catholic theologian Paul Zulehner, suggesting the church appeared to be in "self destruct" mode.

Well, the Pope continues to win friends and influence people.

2. The titel of the article and its content are world apart.
The titel of the article indicates that the whole Catholic folowers in Austria are up in arms againest the Pope's decision. But, the content of the artcle indicates that it is all about one person's opinion.

It is sad to see how low Jornalism has decended, and how it is controlled by a certain interest group.

4. It's also sad to see just how many spelling errors you have in such a short post!
I mean well beyond simple typos.

6. I see 4 people, and one group quoted in the article
so you are wrong. Busek, Zulehner, Schoenborn, Pueringer and "Wir Sind Kirche" all criticise at least one of the Pope's decisions.

What "certain interest group" are you claiming controls journalism?

11. Sadly, I suspect you're right about that poster's conspiracy theory
but, from past experience, I don't expect them to come and defend themselves. Because they can't, I suppose.

12. You have no idea how many times I have tried to go to church...
but there's always this guy in a yarmulke standing in front of it telling me how the church isn't living up to my ideals. Damn is he convincing.

:sarcasm:

Yeah, I think that's what captain thesaurus is implying as well.

5. You know these picks must be pretty out to
lunch when even the former head of the conservative party calls them "appalling." Since I am not very knowledgeable regarding Austrian politics, I looked up some info on them.

"With regard to its platform, the Austrian People's Party represents conservatism, running on a platform of respect for traditions and stability of social order. In particular, it is expressly not interested in strengthening Austria's incomplete separation of church and state and appears to be somewhat skeptical of affirmative action, gay rights, and other forms of real or perceived social engineering."

Their former chairman found Benny's pick "appalling."

9. It appears to me that the Catholic Church is being Bushwhacked--as we were--
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 10:50 AM by Peace Patriot
that is, pushed way, way over to the far fascist right, in order to prevent real change, when it bounces back to DINO-ization ('Democrat in name only'), where we are now. Our Forever War continues. Trillions and trillions of dollars are still being stuffed into the pockets of the super-rich and war profiteers. Corpo/fascism still rules, but has a prettier face and a few mitigations ("scraps from the table" thrown to the unemployed wage slaves and cannon fodder of corporate rule). Whatever you or I may believe about Barack Obama's intentions, that is the reality. We jump for joy when our president closes the medieval torture chambers at Guantanamo Bay--and who couldn't be joyful about that? (--still not closed, though, please note)--but the torturers and murderers of the prior junta escape scot-free of any consequences, and nothing has really changed as to the rule of law. What one president orders by fiat, another president can undo, and the next just do it again. As for the 'bailout,' Lord, FDR must be rolling in his grave, it is such a bunch of thieving 'robber baron' bullshit.

So-o-o, just as with the Bushwhack/DINO ugly dance, these fascist policies of the fascist Pope are aimed at preventing future reform--reform that is pushing up from the people, all over the world--in an institution that is even more corrupt than the U.S. government, and has been in need of a thorough cleansing for about 1,500 years (when the Church first became viciously sexist and hierarchical--and very un-Christian).

The reforms that are coming are threefold, and all have to do with the male self-worship and hatred of women that are polluting Christ's teachings: Women priests, bishops and potential popes; equal voice to women on Church birth control, abortion and marriage policies; acknowledgment that the notion that God is a man, and not a woman, is a mere projection of male ego and a grave theological error.

Like universal health care, and ending the Forever War, and dismantling corporate rule, here, the movement for these reforms in the Catholic Church has been building for some time--for at least five decades, since Pope John XXIII and the ecumenical movement (as is true of political reform here--building for about four decades, at least since Reagan). The fascist Pope's purpose is not to stop the reforms--he can't; the Church will simply die, if it doesn't reform (much like the U.S. empire is dying). His purpose is to DINO-ize the reforms--when the reform wave hits, to retain some aspects of male self-worship, and some ability of the patriarchs in the Church to control, direct and profit from women's sexuality and fertility. That is what the Catholic Church has been about, for some 1,500 years--hating and controlling women, and slaying the Goddess in God. Reversal of this grave and un-Christian and soul-searing error is the change that is coming. The Church prickdom has fought it with every fiber of their being. Now they have to prepare for, and try to undermine, this long, long-needed change.

The issue is not really this Holocaust-denying bishop--just as the issue with Bush & brethren was never gay rights, or "terrorism." The issue is CONTROL--of everything--to serve the power-hungry dominators of both religion and wealth. With weak reforms, the fascists can come back, time and again, to control our spirits and our minds, and/or to loot our coffers and force their evil--torture, mass death, vast criminality--upon us. So, in both cases--the Bushwhacks, and this Pope--they are pushing a fascist extreme in the face of great peoples' movement for fundamental change, so that people will be satisfied with minor and cosmetic change, to keep the fascist power structures of the world in tact.
