manufacturer of the car thinking that there is a problem or malfunction with the car.

I guess they don't watch the Sopranos.

3. One word: Batteries.
Depending on the make-up of the chemicals in those batteries, it's very possible that they are the cause of the explosion. Tis one thing that no one mentions when talking about hybrids, if we want something with lithium ion batteries (as plug-in hybrids would use), we are actually loading little bombs in our cars.

5. Yep but it's not like they are any more dangerous than a tank full of gas.
I saw a car explode on the highway once. Kaboom doesn't convey the explosion.

7. Showing video of the car on CNN now...
That does NOT look like a bomb explosion. That looks like his engine went boom, maybe a battery explosion? There is no flame damage and the damage is limited to the engine area.

9. Agree...
...I just saw the pics and, yes, the damage is primarily in the engine compartment. Plus the front bumper is blown nearly off. Unless this was a very stupid bomber ~~ the car itself blew up.

IMO, Lexus is a piece of crap and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over priced.

JMHO

10. His practice was primarily for asthma and allergies.
I cannot imagine anything less controversial. Maybe he helped defrock a bad MD? That is about all I can think of...but I cannot see anything in his area of practice that would call adverse attention to him.

BTW: MSNBC is reporting that there was a second person in the car who was also injured.

13. News on this is on again on MSNBC...
Edited on Wed Feb-04-09 12:03 PM by Hepburn
...and they are not saying who the 2nd person is. Seems like it was not his wife, tho.

They showed pics again...and from the top ~~ from rear point to the front of the vehicle ~~ the explosion looks to have blown out from the front of the car and not inward toward the passenger compartment. Sure looks like a problem with the car and not a planted bomb IMO.

Edit for typo

.... in fact, it is mandatory.

Further, this doc has no known connections to abortion in any way. Not so far, at least.

14. Up Date: I am typing as the speak.
Feddies now think that this was an explosive device.

Too much explosive energy involved ~~ that is the basis of their conclusion. Great damage to the car. Damage is consistent with an explosive device. But...they have not recovered any explosive device or parts thereof.

Also: Not two people in the car ~~ only the MD in the car at the time of the explosion.

18. I don't think that's caused by gasoline
There is no possibility of fuel vapor build-up underneath the hood, especially when driving. Any gasoline leak there would simply burst into flame, maybe with a little fireball.

Looks like a bomb to me.

19. Car was a Lexus SUV hybrid....
...so not sure about how much gasoline would be under the hood. I have no clue on the design of this engine. Matter of fact, I did not know that Lexus was doing any hybrids.

20. It's a hybrid...
It's got a regular internal-combustion engine under the hood from the Toyota line, with a transmission and a gas tank and all the usual accruments of an automobile.

It, however, also has an electric motor tied to the transmission, powered by a battery pack someplace, probably in the rear of the car (to properly balance the weight of the vehicle on it's tires).

This has to be a bomb. Nothing else in a car would do this. Too much damage.

I'll guess the bomber hoped to cause the car to fatally crash. Either the shock of the event would cause the driver to lose control and crash, or to blow out the suspension and turn the Lexus into a tricycle.

22. Thanks for the info....
...I have no clue on Toyota Hybrids ~~ I assume that is who makes the one in the Lexus.

Hearing on MSNBC that the MD was found outside the car, on the ground. He is still in surgery and deemed in critical condition.
