Take action to support Mass Transit it the Senate - (202) 224-3121

Call your senators and tell them oppose these amendments and support Mass transit and infrastructure.
-----------------------------
BREAKING: $7.5 billion in rail and competitive funds raided for highways

Write your Senator and tell them to preserve funding for high-speed rail and transit.
BREAKING NEWS: Sen. Kit Bond is offering two amendments to the Senate’s stimulus legislation that would raid other funds and direct them to highway funds. The highway funding in the Senate bill is already at $27 billion, with most doled out via blank check to state DOT’s with zero accountability for prioritizing backlogged repair or outlining what the funds should accomplish.

More highway funding is not what we need right now.

Sen. Bond’s two amendments would take existing funds and redirect them to highways.

The first amendment strikes the $2 billion for high speed rail grants, redirecting it to highway funding.
The second amendment strikes the $5.5 billion in competitive grants for transportation projects meeting criteria established by the DOT, redirecting that $5.5 billion into highway funding.

1. The monopoly on money by the highways and airlines stinks.
The Moscow Metro keeps expanding.

Here are photographs of one of the stations opened in the past year:

7. Last summer, I went for the first time to the train station in Philly...
I was overwhelmed with the size and even beauty of the building. We could do this kind of thing back in those days - we can't even seem to get good rail passenger transportation except to major cities. Our rail system is a bad joke compared to even the smallest nations of Europe.

Early last week, I emailed Arlen Specter urging him to support the stimulus and especially rail and infrastructure related portions of it.
Hope someone at least reads that email to him....

8. Aren't electric cars powered by renewables
the only solution that have the potential for zero hydrocarbon emmissions?

9. Kick Call to Support these amendments
There are a number of amendments that may be offered on the Senate floor that could add additional funding for public transportation, including:

An amendment sponsored by Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Diane Feinstein (D-CA) that would add $25 billion for infrastructure, including $5 billion for transit. (This amendment, which would add funds for the New Starts and Fixed Guideway Modernization programs, was set aside after it failed on a procedural vote, but the amendment sponsors may to attempt to revive it.)

An amendment sponsored by Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) which would add $6.5 billion for transit, and allow a portion of the funds to be used to cover operating expenses; and

An amendment sponsored by Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and James Inhofe (R-OK) that would redirect stimulus funds not obligated within one year of passage to highway, transit and water resources projects.

Also tell your senator to oppose the Bond ammendment which might come to floor, which would strip 5 billion from transit projects.
