Americorps grew out of an FDR program called civilian conservation corps.
I dedicated two years of my life to Americorps and it was the best experience I have ever had. I built Environmentally friendly ,Energy Efficient, Low income houses with Casa Verde Builders and Built and maintained trails, helped out with community gardens, and helped restore habitats for the Golden Warbler (endangered species).I also had lots of fun met cool people got money for collegeand gained pride in my self and community.
Some programs mentor kids in innercity school, some help with grant work, and some travel around the country and provide disaster relief.
Casa Verde Builders and Environmental Corps are run out of American Youthworks, an Austin based non profit that also runs a charter school for at risk youth

1. Sounds like an excellent idea
I don't think you could support a family with this, though.

6. I believe about 28 but there are also programs
like Americorps vista and Senior Corps that accept older people. I also know that they need crew leaders and i dont believe there is an age limit for that

3. most of the ones in our area want workers aged 18 to 24.
And they want *volunteers* - no pay or token coinage.

Err, thanks, but we don't qualify.

4. New Orleans is being rebuilt largely with AmeriCorps/VISTA volunteers
most of the grassroots agencies that are doing what Boosh and Heckuvajob Brownie wouldn't :grr: can't afford paid full-time staff (or I'd probably be posting from one of them!), so they've turned to AmeriCorps and VISTA in a big way. See how many of the positions here:

http://neworleans.craigslist.org/npo

are funded through AmeriCorps and/or VISTA.
