For those who don't believe the media is the enemy.. READ THIS!

Last night, commenter NFR83 wrote:

I just got laid off at ABC

They don't want Democrats on air. We've been only booking Republicans because "everybody already knows where the Democrats stand"

After all, what are the Democrats going to do? complain? It's the liberal media, right?

I was in a meeting last week where our producer flat out said we needed to "bring Obama's approval ratings down"

Everyone who got laid off this week was an Obama supporter.

Surprised?

This isn't definitive proof of anything, but it would explain why Republicans are dominating the airwaves these days.

13. Yep, and he's only one in a long list.
Kerry
Gore
Clinton
Carter
Muskie
Even George Romney (Mitt's dad, who was a moderate Republican back when there were moderate Republicans)

And it's not just the hit jobs. It's the "put on ignore" jobs--the candidacies they refuse to report on or even ask questions of in "debates" and especially the stories that they forbid to be reported on.

44. Edwards was a MSM FAVORITE in 2004
There were articles that suggested he could win the nomination in late February after Kerry won 16 primaries, many in states that a Southern populist should have easily won, and Edwards had won only SC. This even though Kerry was polling over 20 points ahead of Ewdards in the MA,CA, and NY primaries the next week on SuperTuesday. He was also pushed in 2005 and 2006 as a serious candidate.

Until his indiscretions, he never got the type of bad media that Dean or John Kerry routinely got - even as they worked hard to do good things. It is true that Edwards started to get very little coverage after Iowa - but that was because the media understood that the only chance he had was to win Iowa big.

46. Clinton?
He actually was given a NYT magazine cover story - I think in about 1990 that spoke of him as a potential superstar. He actually got incredible breaks in 1992 from the media, which let things like Gennifer Flowers and his multiple stories on the draft drop. The NYT did have an article about Whitewater, but it did not accuse him of anything. I would say that in 1992, the one they didn't like was GHWB. How much coverage was given to him being sick in Japan? There coverage of his fasination with the checkout scanner?

49. I was thinking mainly of TV and Monica Lewinsky
During one six-month period leading up to the impeachment, whichever network's evening news I was watching at the time, the lead story every night except two was "Crisis in the White House" (Clinton got a blowjob) accompanied by a loud crescendo of dramatic music. Clinton's blowjob got pre-empted once for a hurricane and once for a tornado during six months. He was succeeding and they were desperately out to get him and destroy him.

issue? Until he does, he's at a huge disadvantage.

In the meantime, the only way he combat the TERRA Media will be by constantly using them as a tool to reach directly to the American people (Gibbs daily briefings, public signings, frequent interviews on the major networks including Faux, calling out right-wing talk radio and tv hosts).

23. That's the thing. Obama pretty much IS our voice in the media.
The media rethugs can blow off Democratic Congressmen, and Democratic Senators and Cabinet members and spokespeople.

They can't blow off the President of the United States.

Fortunately, President Obama is an expert in gaming the media, and can get his message heard even through a hostile media.

We have to keep flooding our representatives' offices with our support of OUR PRESIDENT, and we have to let the media know, as well.

PRESIDENT OBAMA (oh, how I love the sound of that!) is already bypassing them, going where he wants, and granting the interviews with the people of his choice. Gibbs is going to be a brilliant Press Secretary, and the Michelle and Barack Charm Offensive is already underway.

He's winning the hearts and minds of Americans - the voters - and that will make the media and the GOPigs looks like the malevolent fools that they are.

But, we've got to stay vocal. And frequent.

I love the guy.

15. We need to bust up the conglomerates..
requiring contrasting viewpoints does nothing. One side for truth..and one side for lies..without pointing out that the one side is lying is useless. We see what the media wants us to see, and because there is no competition, they have the power to create public perception.

The Fairness Doctrine had two basic elements: It required broadcasters to devote some of their airtime to discussing controversial matters of public interest, and to air contrasting views regarding those matters. Stations were given wide latitude as to how to provide contrasting views: It could be done through news segments, public affairs shows or editorials. The doctrine did not require equal time for opposing views but required that contrasting viewpoints be presented

They function more like PR departments for corporate America than anything else. These beasts need to be broken up.

Media outlets are always going to have a bias toward their owners. The problem is that we have exceedingly few owners.

25. What we need more than the Fairness Doctrine...
A restored Fairness Doctrine will only be as good as those who enforce it, and that doesn't fill me with confidence. Weimar Germany had anti-discrimination laws, but that didn't stop the Nazi's open anti-semitism because it wasn't enforced.

Even more than the Fairness Doctrine what is needed is the breakup of media conglomerates and restrictions on ownership. Let media outlets be independent media outlets, not the propaganda wings of integrated organizations that have their own agenda.

7. This is as unsurprising as the sun rising, or as water flowing downhill.
It's quite obvious and has been for quite some time.

I now KNOW...we now KNOW, how a society achieves Nazi-level control over a media without having to murder anyone.

I have to say, what the Bushies have created is 50 times more powerful than what the Nazis or Soviets created.

And they don't have to kill anybody. Well, a few murders that are performed with "plausible deniability" to make sure everyone gets the mesage and stays in line, but mostly Bushie Control is as gentle as a wafting breeze of almond-scented Zyklon-B.

The fact is that nothing has changed, and the Bushies are still running things.

If I had not seen it with my own eyes, I would not believe such a thing were possible. After 9 years, I am not sure anything else IS possible, anymore.

Link TV seems to need donations like PBD used to. A lot of us are too poor, after 30 years of having our veins drained off to be able to support them.
How about getting together with friends to pool cooking duties, so each family doesn't have to cook every day.......then we could bake our own bread etc, cookies, cakes. That would bypass the nasty additives and cooking from scratch is actually cheaper, as well as deprive corps. of prepared food sales. That way no daily time spent in the kitchen even if you are only microwaving!
Years ago I belogned to a babysitting co-op. My kids were older than most so to avoid, a having to keep an eagle eye on babies.I used my hours keeping the books for, and making calls to schedule sits.

"Rich" is the agenda. It is not about ideology.

It matters not whether the rich are "liberal" or not. Most wealthy people are liberal, in the way they live. They just don't think that we should get any of the benefits. This is nit to say that rich people are bad. But when the divide in the country is between the haves and have-nots, and when you must be a have to be heard or have any influence, and you must embrace the system and play the game to become a have, and it is in your self-interest to promote the needs of the haves, we should not be surprised that everything is rugged to favor the haves.

The divide over issues and ideologies is all a distraction. We don't need to have "our" rich people in charge, we need to give a voice and equality to those who are not rich.

24. This has been going on for several years now...
Check out what Barry Crimmins had to say in his classic essay, I Was Almost a Stooge For National Plutocrat Radio (2/23/03)

Two years into the court-appointed Bush administration's destruction of our way of life and the first call I received from NPR was a request to belittle Democrats. Ostensibly they wanted me to make fun of the fact that the field of candidates had grown very quickly in recent weeks. That's right; NPR was soliciting me to satirize democracy for showing signs of vibrancy. And so this young producer tried to steer me that way. She started by mentioning the size of the Democratic field and then asked, "Do you think any of them has the stature to take on George W. Bush?"

I said, "My dog Lloyd has the stature to take on Bush." But then I allowed, "Of course, I raised him myself."

We went back and forth and I said I could run down the field for her. She reminded me twice that the game I was to bag was of the Democratic variety. I said I'd put something together for her. I requested a list of candidates in case I'd overlooked someone. She sent the Dem roster and the next morning, I wrote the piece. They had my script by midday Wednesday. I was supposed to tape it Thursday. I figured if I got it in early, we could sort out any difficulties with time to spare. Like I said, I'm a professional.

27. I believe it. CNBC is a total farce.
They're not even HIDING it anymore that they're nothing but the worst kind of corporate Repuke arm for laissez-fail Bewsh sympathizers like Jack Welch, Steve Forbes and Dick Armey. From minute ONE, they've been on the attack and will not stop. They're determined to keep the pecking order and power structure in this country EXACTLY THE WAY THEY ARE, and we will have not a damned thing to say or do about it.

Again, no actual proof anywhere that, all of the sudden, *now* they're firing the Democrats. It seems like they would have fired them during the Bush years.

Seems fishy.

I agree that the the MSM is right wing and broken beyond belief (I don't watch 'em either), but this particular claim seems kind of dumb.

36. We need more of these people coming forward
Not getting laid off ..... that's not what I mean.

We need producers and camera people and editors and make up people and others in low level support to come forward and say what they know. Anecdotal evidence that, in total, can breach the walls of this RW fortress.

No highly paid on air personality is going to do it. NONE of them - not one. Not even your favorites. No, it will take a whole barrage of low level people to do it.

38. The media's first job is to get eyeballs on ads. It's second job is keeping
said advertisers happy. It's third job is keeping people powerless so the only recourse they have is to consume.

All that is easier to do with the corporatists running the government.

48. They will just move on to the next stage and promote
businesses which profit from poverty, ie; pawnshops, pay day lenders, gambling casinos, for profit prison corporations, private security, etc.

The corporate media powers that be, don't care what happens to the American People, if they did, they would never have enabled Bush to power. He was obviously unqualified for the most powerful job in the land and they never exposed him, preferring to camouflage or ignore his shortcomings, lies and mistakes instead.

Today after eight years of brown-nosing Cheney/Bush, and reading their questions from a script, the Milquetoast Media will pretend to be a free press again by magnifying and harping on every zit in President Obama's Administration. The corporate media's courage to buck, investigate or question authority knows no bounds, when the authority in power is attempting to represent the American People's best interests.

than you subscribe to it. We are as stones dropping in a pond, with each post being either praise or criticism making ripples far beyond the scope of our consciousness.

Our numbers are growing as is our awareness, many people read D.U. that aren't even registered, D.U. is only one battalion in a swelling Internet Corps; still somewhat in it's infancy.

We're like a baby Hercules strangling two snakes put in his crib to assassinate him, still learning the extent of our people power.

The vast majority of us have no monetary agenda for posting our points of view and they can be challenged instantaneously for the whole world to determine the merits thereof.

63. time for progressive groups to boycott and picket limbaugh radio
the 1000 local stations and their local sponsors need to be shamed like the reverse paul reveres they are, instead of ignored. we need media reform and everything the GOP does starts with UNCONTESTED talk radio repetition to prechew and establish their talking points. obama says it all runs through the limbaugh/talk radio monopoly and he's right.

real media and election reform should be next on the agenda and it will be a lot easier if blue dog- red state (limbaugh) dems and 'moderate' repubs aren't getting trashed and threatened everyday from the worlds biggest blowhard soapbox. an UNCONTESTED soapbox.

All have conservative biases.

Granted Fox is worse but they are all biased.

Find online newspapers and sources that you can use to point to as liberal and use them as examples of what the 4 above could be.

Why can't we have names of people rather than screen names?

How can we hope to restore integrity to the media when we don't know who precisely to complain about?

There is a way to change this abhorrent situation, I know there is. But it has to come with a lot of kicking and screaming and shouting LOUDLY...not hiding behind pseudonyms because there's no use fighting it.

69. Obama used the internet to win and he'll need it to keep his head above water.
MSM doesn't control the web, so we can expect to see Obama continue to use that to his advantage. He already put his bailout plan on a website with all spending attached to it to be posted with complete transparency. I can see RW the slant in stories about the bailout plan everywhere. I don't buy that there's a "public outcry."

There are a number of Bush cronies that have big MSM jobs (Ailes, et al) and will always battle the Left. But there are others that have lost a shitload of their portfolio in the last year. I'm hoping that their greed leads them to cut BO some slack. The Boston Globe has seemed to swing back to the center a bit.

When they didnt question Bush & Co when they lied about Iraqs weapon capabilities. When they ignored exploding violence levels in Iraq, when they didnt report EVERY NIGHT HOW MANY TROOPS HAD DIED.

THEY REPORT ABOUT GAY MARRIAGE, THE ECONOMY PARIS HILTON POT SMOKING PHELPS AND A BAJILLION OTHER THINGS(not that these arent important in their times) BUT WE HAVE MEN AND WOMEN DYING EVERY SINGLE DAY AND LEMME TELL YOU, YOUR AVERAGE DUMBSHIT AMERICAN DOESNT CARE AS LONG AS AMERICAN IDOL KEEPS ROLLING.

IF YOU DO NOT CHOKE BACK TEARS EVERY TIME YOU HEAR ABOUT A SOLDIER DYING, IF THE CURRENT SUICIDE LEVELS DONT MAKE YOU WANT TO DIG YOUR GUTS OUT WITH A SPOON, IF IT DOESNT MAKE YOU INSANE THAT WE STILL CANT FIELD 100% EFEFCTIVE BODY ARMOUR THEN YOU ARE NOT INVOLVED.

AND LESS THAN 3% OF MEDIA COVERAGE IS THIS. ITS THE BIGGEST SPENDING PROGRAM IN HISTORY AND WE DONT EVEN ACKNOWLEDGE IT EXISTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

98. No, it started long before 2002.
During the Clinton Administration, on every single network, there was 24/7 attack. Of course Clinton was far from perfect but what he got, Obama is also sure to get. Every crazy allegation was repeated as if true time and time again. The media is our greatest problem, as I've said a million times on DU. Nothing is as important than gaining a foothold in major media.

Obama Does Not Support Return of Fairness Doctrine

There may be some Democrats talking about reimposing the Fairness Doctrine, but one very important one does not: presumptive presidential nominee Barack Obama.

By John Eggerton -- Broadcasting & Cable, 6/25/2008 12:25:00 PM MT

There may be some Democrats talking about reimposing the Fairness Doctrine, but one very important one does not: presumptive presidential nominee Barack Obama.

The Illinois senator’s top aide said the issue continues to be used as a distraction from more pressing media business.

"Sen. Obama does not support reimposing the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters," press secretary Michael Ortiz said in an e-mail to B&C late Wednesday.

"He considers this debate to be a distraction from the conversation we should be having about opening up the airwaves and modern communications to as many diverse viewpoints as possible," Ortiz added. "That is why Sen. Obama supports media-ownership caps, network neutrality, public broadcasting, as well as increasing minority ownership of broadcasting and print outlets."

99. rnCNBC this morning: Jack Welch asking Mitt Romney questions about the stimulus!
It's the pinnacle of disgust. The Moron and the Mormon.

"Mitt Romney! Your party's economic policies have failed average Americans since 1981 and culminated in the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression! Let's enthusiastically hear YOUR whiny, crybaby-assed opinion on how President Obama should further coddle the extremely wealthy!"

"Jack Welch! Your tenure as a CEO saw more jobs killed than the Black Death while you and your crony's perks, wealth and salaries went up a thousand-fold! You supported a system which led to your coffers being filled to the brim with taxpayer-funded war cash while 90% of us saw our wages either stagnate, go down or erased completely! So naturally, we're going to have YOUR troll-like carcass on television as the voice of economic reason!"

CNBC is now doing Cavuto-esque "questions" every other graphic, like "IS ECONOMIC COLLAPSE INEVITABLE?" "STIMULUS: BAD FOR BUSINESS?"
